Working On The Refrigerant Circuit
On Vehicles with a High Voltage System (Hybrid Vehicles)
For all procedures on vehicles with a high-voltage system, pay attention to the additional warnings for these vehicles. Refer to SAFETY PRECAUTIONS WHEN WORKING ON VEHICLES WITH HIGH-VOLTAGE SYSTEM .
If it is necessary for the following procedure to perform work near the high-voltage components, (refer to SAFETY PRECAUTIONS WHEN WORKING NEAR HIGH-VOLTAGE COMPONENTS ) and "pay attention to the general warnings when working on the high-voltage system". Refer to the appropriate service information. .
Working on a high voltage system when activated or with the ignition turned on
The engine may start unexpectedly and may cause a toxicity hazard in confined spaces when performing work while the ignition is turned on or when the ready mode is activated. Risk of pinching or pulling parts of the body and clothing.
Perform the following steps before switching on the ignition:
- Move the selector lever into P position.
- Activate the parking brake.
- Switch off the ignition.
- Open the engine hood.
- Connect the charging unit, for example the :VAS5095A , to the battery jump start terminal for the 12V vehicle electrical system
- Switch on the ignition.
-- To minimize the number of automatic motor starts during the testing and measuring procedures while the ready mode is active, charge the vehicle batteries in battery support mode with, for example the :VAS5904 . Refer to BATTERY, CHARGING and SAFETY PRECAUTIONS WHEN WORKING ON THE HIGH-VOLTAGE SYSTEM .
-- For testing and measurement procedures that require the ready mode to be active or the ignition to be switched on, the selector lever must be in the "P" position and the parking brake must be activated. The required tools must be placed so that they do not come into contact with any rotating components in the engine and they must also not go into the vicinity of the rotating components when the engine is running.
Also move the selector lever into the "P" position and activate the parking brake for testing and measurement procedures which require the ignition to be on, but do not require the ready mode to be active.
The ready mode is displayed in the Instrument Cluster Control Module -J285- above the "power meter". Refer to Owner's Manual.
For activating and deactivating the ready mode. Refer to the Owner's Manual (while doing so, note the display in the Instrument Cluster Control Module -J285-).
All Vehicles
Risk of injury due to excess pressure in the A/C system during heating.
- Exposure to heat creates considerable pressure in the A/C system, which could cause it to burst.
- Do not weld or hard- or soft-solder on sections of the A/C system when filled. This pertains also for welding and soldering work on the vehicle, in the event that parts of the climate control system may heat up
- Replace damaged or leaking A/C system parts.
Malfunctions due to moisture entering the A/C system.
- When servicing the A/C system, all open components and pipe connections are to be immediately resealed.
- If the A/C system was open for a longer period of time, check the components for corrosion damage and replace as needed.
