CONDITION SUMMARY

Situation:  A customer may express a concern that the orange Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) warning light is illuminated on the Instrument Cluster (IC) requesting a DPF regeneration. If the regeneration is not completed the DPF warning light will then turn red.

A technician will find the following Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC's) stored in the Engine Control Module (ECM) memory.

  • P246B-00
  • P2463-00

A technician may also find the following DTC stored.

  • P0234-77

This issue affects 3.0L diesel engines (190/600 Nm and 225/700 Nm) with DPF in EU5 and EU6 Markets within the above Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) range.

This version has been created to update the Affected Vehicles, Parts, Warranty, Service Instruction and Diagnostic Procedure sections.

Cause:  The engine throttle air flow characteristics are incompatible with the engine calibration.

Suggested Customer Concern Code MD1.

Action:  Should a customer express this concern, follow the Service Instruction and Diagnostic Procedure below.

SERVICE INFORMATION

NOTE: If any other DTC's are stored in the ECM (for example DTC's indicating a boost air leak) these must be rectified before completing this bulletin.
  1. A new air intake shut off throttle should only be installed when it is marked with a date stamp of 13 or 14 (this denotes that the part was manufactured in 2013/2014). If the air intake shut off throttle has a date stamp of 15 then it must not be replaced.

SERVICE INSTRUCTION

CAUTION: When installed the intake air shut off throttle must be set using the JLR approved diagnostic equipment.

All vehicles

  1. Remove the engine cover (see TOPIx, Workshop Manual, section 501-05).
  2. Inspect the date stamp on the air intake shut off throttle.

If the date stamp is 13 or 14

  3. Replace the Intake air shut off throttle (see TOPIx Workshop Manual, section 304-04).

    All vehicles

  4. Install the engine cover (see TOPIx, Workshop Manual, section 501-05).

DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE

CAUTION: SDD does not show DPF soot loading correctly via the regeneration screen. SDD will report 0% irrespective of actual loading (this is due to be rectified in the near future). Only use data logger to confirm true soot mass readings.
NOTE: ECM DTC P246B-00/P2463-00/P0234-77 are required to be present before completing this Diagnostic Procedure.
NOTE: The Engine Control Module (ECM) may also be known as the Powertrain Control Module (PCM).
NOTE: The air intake shut off throttle may also be known as the throttle valve.
CAUTION: This procedure requires SDD DVD142.05 and Calibration File 214 loaded or later.
  1. Connect the approved battery support unit.
  2. Connect SDD to the vehicle and begin a new diagnostic session, by reading the vehicle identification number (VIN) for the current vehicle and initiating the data collect sequence.
  3. Follow the SDD prompts.
  4. Using SDD data logger record the DPF concentration reading.

Configure existing module - Powertrain control module

  5. If the hyperlink is not available, the application can be found as follows:
    • Select the Diagnosis Session Type.
    • Select any of the following symptoms:
      • Electrical > Instruments > Warning lamps > Engine malfunction lamp > Lamp illuminated
      • Electrical > Instruments > Information and message center > Message display area > Powertrain
    • Select the 'Extras' tab
    • Run: Configure existing module - Powertrain control module

Powertrain set-up - Throttle valve actuator (this is only required if the air intake shut off throttle has been replaced)

  6. If the hyperlink is not available, the application can be found as follows:
    • Select the Diagnosis Session Type.
    • Run: Powertrain set-up - Throttle valve actuator

Diesel particulate filter dynamic regeneration (all vehicles)

  7. If the hyperlink is not available, the application can be found as follows:
    • Select the Diagnosis Session Type.
    • Select any of the following symptoms:
      • Electrical > Instruments > Warning lamps > DPF warning lamp > Lamp illuminated
    • From 'Recommendations', run: Powertrain - Diesel particulate filter dynamic regeneration
  8. Using SDD data logger record the DPF soot concentration reading. If the soot concentration reading is below 6g regeneration has been successful and the vehicle can be released. If the soot concentration reading shows above 6g please carry out the dynamic regeneration again until the soot concentration reads below 6g on the data logger reading.
  9. When all of the tasks are complete, exit the current session by selecting the Session tab and then select the Close Session option.
  10. Disconnect SDD and the JLR approved battery support unit.
