Causes

  • Open or short in driver airbag stage 2 squib circuit
  • High or low squib resistance (out-of-spec)
  • Faulty/contaminated airbag connector or wiring harness (steering column area)
  • Worn or damaged clock spring (spiral cable)
  • Poor chassis/connector grounds or corroded terminals
  • Faulty SRS/airbag control module (less common)

Symptoms

  • SRS / airbag warning lamp illuminated on instrument panel
  • Driver airbag may be disabled (airbag light and DTC present)
  • Possible multiple SRS fault codes logged
  • Fault present after steering wheel work or collision repair
  • No other drivability symptoms (electrical problem limited to SRS)

What to check

  • Read and record all SRS codes and freeze-frame data with a capable scan tool
  • Check battery voltage and charging system before diagnosing (stable 12 V+)
  • Visual inspection of steering wheel, clock spring, and driver airbag connector
  • Inspect wiring harness for damage, pinching or chafing between wheel and column
  • Check connector terminals for corrosion, bent pins or poor contact
  • Measure squib resistance and continuity at airbag connector and at SRS module

Signal parameters

  • Squib resistance (ohms) — expected to be within manufacturer spec for driver stage 2
  • Continuity of squib circuit between driver airbag connector and SRS module
  • Supply voltage to SRS module (VBAT) and squib firing circuit voltage
  • Present/latched fault status and freeze frame data from SRS control module
  • Number of deployments recorded / readiness status flags

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Read all SRS/airbag codes and freeze-frame using a scanner; note related codes.
  2. Before touching SRS components, disable system per manufacturer procedure (disconnect negative battery terminal and wait specified time).
  3. Perform a visual inspection of steering wheel, airbag connector, and harness for damage or corrosion.
  4. Reconnect battery if required by test equipment and measure squib resistance at the driver airbag connector and at the SRS module connector; compare to Land Rover specification. Do not short squib wires to battery.
  5. Check continuity from the squib pins to the SRS module; isolate any open or high-resistance sections (clock spring, connectors).
  6. Probe for short to ground or B+ in the squib circuit using a controlled method (manufacturer-recommended tests) — do not attempt to simulate deployment.
  7. If clock spring shows intermittent or open circuit, replace clock spring and retest.
  8. Repair or replace damaged wiring/connectors and clean/secure terminals. Replace squib or driver airbag only if resistance and other tests indicate a failed inflator.
  9. If wiring and components test good, suspect SRS control module fault; verify module power/ground and communications before module replacement.
  10. After repairs, clear codes and perform SRS system self-tests. Confirm no related codes and that SRS lamp extinguishes. Follow any post-repair calibration or reset procedures.

Likely causes

  • Damaged clock spring causing intermittent or open circuit to driver squib
  • Corroded/loose airbag connector at the steering wheel
  • Short to ground or battery at the squib wiring from chafing
  • Squib resistance outside manufacturer specification (failed squib)
  • Faulty airbag control module or internal driver circuit fault

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Stored when the SRS control module detects an electrical fault in the driver airbag stage 2 deployment circuit (open, short, excessive resistance, or module/internal driver fault).
🟡 Repair difficulty: Medium
⏱️ Diagnostic time: 1–3 hours
