Causes

  • Wiring shorted to battery positive (chafed wire, pin pushed through insulation, damaged loom)
  • Corroded/contaminated lamp socket or connector bridged to +12V
  • Failed/shorted bulb or LED unit (internal short)
  • Faulty instrument cluster / BCM driver stage (internal short on PCB)
  • Poor or missing ground creating backfeeding conditions
  • Aftermarket accessories tied into lighting circuit causing a feed to the lamp circuit

Symptoms

  • Left turn indicator warning lamp illuminated continuously or constant instead of flashing
  • Turn signal may not flash correctly or lamp stays on steady
  • Other lamp-related warnings on dash (depending on vehicle)
  • Turn signal may work on the exterior lamps but warning lamp behaves incorrectly
  • Related fuses may blow or show heat if heavy short present

What to check

  • Visual inspection of left front/rear lamp sockets, connectors and wiring for damage, corrosion, water ingress or pin contact with chassis/battery +
  • Check related fuses for the indicator circuit
  • Operate left turn signal and observe behavior of dash lamp and exterior lamps
  • With ignition ON, backprobe left turn lamp connector and BCM/cluster connector to see whether battery + is present when it should not be (see signal params)
  • Disconnect the left lamp/indicator unit and see if the fault returns — if fault clears with lamp disconnected, suspect the lamp or downstream wiring
  • Continuity/insulation check from lamp circuit to battery + with battery disconnected (use ohmmeter): a low resistance indicates a short to positive

Signal parameters

  • Normal operation: control is low‑side switched. When flashing you should see a pulsed ground (0 V) at the control pin relative to chassis ground; pulse frequency typically ~1–3 Hz. When off the driver is high‑impedance/open. Exterior lamp sees battery + when lamp is energized and near 0 V at the control during flash.
  • Fault condition (short to positive): continuous battery voltage appears at the control pin or lamp socket when it should be open or pulsing. Multimeter: ~12 V DC present at control pin with ignition ON and lamp off. Oscilloscope: steady DC or improper waveform instead of pulsed ground.
  • When measuring, backprobe connectors; do not short pins together. If measuring continuity to +12V with battery disconnected, expect near 0 Ω if a direct short exists.

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Preliminary: note vehicle history, any recent repairs or bodywork to rear/front lamps. Read and record freeze frame and stored codes, then clear codes to retest.
  2. Visual: inspect left indicator lamp, socket, connector and wiring harness for physical damage, corrosion or signs of moisture. Repair visible damage.
  3. Bulb/LED test: remove the bulb or indicator unit. Reconnect and operate the turn signal. If the code clears or behaviour changes, replace the bulb/LED unit.
  4. Measure at lamp socket: backprobe the positive and control pins with ignition ON while operating left signal. Expected: pulsed ground on control. If you see steady +12 V on the control pin, suspect a short to positive downstream or internal bulb short.
  5. Isolation test: disconnect the lamp connector and check for presence of battery + between the control conductor and chassis ground. If +12 V remains with lamp disconnected, the fault is upstream (harness or BCM).
  6. Continuity/insulation check: with battery disconnected, measure resistance between the lamp control wire and battery +. Low resistance (< a few ohms) indicates short to positive. Also check resistance to chassis ground — should be high when disconnected.
  7. Inspect harness along route (doors, bumper, trunk) for chafing; repair wiring as required. Replace damaged connectors or sockets.
  8. If wiring appears intact and short persists with connector disconnected, suspect BCM/cluster driver. Verify other outputs from the same module. If multiple outputs fail or diagnostic data from BCM indicates internal fault, replace/repair BCM or instrument cluster per manufacturer procedure.
  9. After repairs, clear codes and verify proper operation over multiple cycles and road test. Re-check for codes after repair.
  10. Safety note: when performing continuity checks, disconnect the battery to avoid damaging electronic modules. Avoid applying voltage to control pins while module is connected unless following manufacturer service procedures.

Likely causes

  • Chafed harness or connector that contacts a +12V source (most common)
  • Failed lamp or LED module with internal short
  • Corroded connector at the lamp or BCM in wet environments
  • Shorted output transistor inside the instrument cluster or BCM
