Causes

What to check

  • Visual inspection of right rear microphone, mounting and wiring for water damage, chafing or corrosion
  • Check connectors at microphone and at the infotainment/telephony module for corrosion, bent pins or poor mating
  • Check related fuses and power supplies for the infotainment/telephony system
  • Measure voltages and continuity at microphone connector with harness connected and with ignition ON (see signal parameters)

Signal parameters

  • Typical microphone bias/supply voltage at mic connector: ~2.5–5.0 V (varies by system and mic type)
  • Typical DC offset on microphone signal line: ~1.0–3.0 V (system dependent)
  • Typical AC voice signal level produced by mic during speech: ~10–200 mV RMS (may be higher for close talk)
  • Expected continuity between microphone ground and vehicle ground: near 0 Ω
  • Expected DC resistance of microphone element (if specified): typically 1 kΩ–10 kΩ for some microphone types; consult vehicle-specific data

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve and record DTCs, then clear codes and re-run test to confirm repeatability.
  2. Verify vehicle software/updates and known technical service bulletins for microphone issues.
  3. Visually inspect the right rear microphone assembly, mounting and harness for moisture, impact damage, or disconnection.
  4. With ignition ON (accessory) backprobe microphone connector at the mic side: check for expected bias/supply voltage and ground reference. Compare to signal parameters.
  5. With a second person speaking near the mic, observe AC signal on oscilloscope or multimeter (AC mV). Confirm presence of voice waveform.
  6. If no bias or signal, trace wiring to the infotainment/telephony module. Check continuity and resistance between mic connector and module connector; inspect for shorts to ground or battery.
  7. Inspect and test intermediate connectors (door seals, roof modules) for intermittent connections by wiggling harness while monitoring signal and DTC status.
  8. If wiring and connectors are good, disconnect microphone and measure microphone element resistance per vehicle specification; or substitute a known-good microphone to confirm.
  9. If a replacement microphone fixes the issue, reassemble and clear codes. If replacement does not fix, test the input at the infotainment/telephony module and consider module repair or replacement.
  10. After repair, perform full function check of hands-free calling and voice systems and confirm DTC does not return.
