Causes

  • Scan CAN bus for related communication errors or U-codes

Signal parameters

  • Sensor supply: typically 5 V reference (varies by model) and ground
  • Output: angular rate signal (degrees/sec) or analog/digital voltage; many sensors idle near mid-rail (≈2.5 V) at 0°/s
  • Sensitivity: small voltage change per deg/s (manufacturer-specific; check service data)
  • Signal behavior: smooth change with controlled yaw; noisy, frozen or out-of-range values indicate fault
  • Communication: some modules report yaw rate over CAN/LIN — message ID and scaling are vehicle-specific

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Use a factory-level scan tool to record C0063, other related codes and freeze frame data; note mileage/time.
  2. Check for additional communication (U) codes; if bus is inactive, repair CAN/LIN first.
  3. Visually inspect the yaw rate sensor, bracket and wiring harness for damage, moisture or corrosion.
  4. With ignition on, back-probe the sensor connector and verify reference voltage and ground per service data.
  5. Monitor live yaw rate signal with scanner or oscilloscope; observe sensor output at rest and during a controlled low-speed test (or on a lift with wheels turned per service instructions).
  6. Perform a wiggle test of harness/connectors while watching live data for intermittent faults.
  7. If supply/ground/comms OK but signal is out of range or absent, consult wiring diagrams and check continuity/resistance of sensor circuits.
  8. If wiring and module communications are good, replace the sensor with a OEM or approved replacement.
  9. After replacement, clear codes and perform any required sensor alignment/calibration or road test procedures with the service tool.
  10. Re-scan to confirm the fault does not return and verify ESC/ABS functions are restored.
