Causes

  • Open circuit in sensor harness
  • Short to ground or battery voltage in sensor circuit
  • Corroded or loose sensor connector
  • Failed wheel speed sensor (active or passive)
  • Damaged, missing or contaminated tone ring/reluctor
  • Excessive air gap between sensor and tone ring

Symptoms

  • ABS warning lamp illuminated
  • Traction/stability control warnings or disabled
  • ABS may not engage under hard braking
  • Intermittent or constant loss of rear-right wheel speed data in live data
  • Possible ABS activation at inappropriate times
  • Reduced stability control performance

What to check

  • Scan ABS module for C0222 and any related codes; note freeze frame/live data
  • Visual inspection of rear-right sensor, connector, and harness for damage or corrosion
  • Check for proper sensor mounting and air gap to tone ring
  • Wiggle harness while monitoring live wheel speed data for intermittent faults
  • Measure sensor resistance (for passive sensors) or verify supply and output (for active sensors)
  • Check continuity and for shorts between sensor signal, ground, and battery

Signal parameters

  • Passive (VR) sensor resistance typically ~800–2000 ohms (varies by model) — compare to factory spec
  • Passive sensor: AC waveform amplitude increases with wheel speed (millivolt to several volts RMS)
  • Active (Hall/3‑wire) sensor: 5 V reference supply present at sensor (or vehicle-specific supply), output toggles between ~0.5–4.5 V (or 0–5 V) with wheel rotation
  • Output frequency proportional to wheel speed; tone ring tooth count determines Hz at given speed (verify against spec)
  • No continuity (open) or near-zero resistance (short) indicates wiring/sensor fault

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Read ABS codes and record freeze-frame/live data for rear-right wheel speed while stationary and during a slow wheel rotation.
  2. Visually inspect sensor, mounting, tone ring, and connector for physical damage, contamination, or missing teeth. Repair obvious issues.
  3. With ignition on (vehicle secure on lift & wheel off if required), backprobe connector: for active sensor verify reference voltage and ground; for passive sensor measure resistance across sensor terminals and compare to spec.
  4. Rotate wheel by hand while monitoring the sensor signal (oscilloscope preferred) to confirm waveform presence and quality. Look for dropouts or noisy signal.
  5. Check harness continuity from sensor connector to ABS module and test for short to ground or battery. Wiggle harness and connectors to reproduce intermittent faults.
  6. If sensor and wiring test OK but signal is weak or noisy, inspect and correct sensor air gap; clean or replace tone ring if contaminated/damaged.
  7. Replace faulty sensor or repair wiring/connector as required. If ABS module wiring pins are corroded or damaged, repair harness and retest.
  8. Clear codes, perform a road test and monitor live data to confirm proper wheel speed readings and that C0222 does not return.
  9. Safety: Support the vehicle securely on a lift or jack stands before working near wheels or suspension.

Likely causes

  • Contaminated or corroded connector at rear right hub
  • Broken or pinched harness at suspension pivot or wheel well
  • Wheel speed sensor internal failure (open/short)
  • Debris or corrosion on tone ring or missing teeth
  • Sensor installed with excessive gap or misalignment

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Stored when the ABS module detects an open, short, implausible or absent signal on the rear‑right wheel speed sensor circuit. May illuminate ABS/traction lamps and disable ABS functionality until resolved.
🟡 Repair difficulty: Medium
⏱️ Diagnostic time: 1.0 - 2.0 hours
