Causes

  • Open or short in left front wheel speed sensor wiring or connector
  • Contaminated, damaged or misaligned wheel speed sensor
  • Damaged tone ring (reluctor) or missing teeth on the wheel hub/ABS ring
  • Faulty wheel bearing causing sensor-to-ring air gap changes
  • Corroded connector or poor electrical grounding
  • Faulty ABS/wheel speed sensor (Hall-effect or variable reluctance)

Symptoms

  • ABS, traction control or stability control warning lamp illuminated
  • ABS/TC intervention may be disabled or behave abnormally
  • ABS control active or false braking events during low-traction conditions
  • Possible speedometer or cruise control irregularities (if vehicle uses same sensor)
  • Noise or roughness from left front wheel bearing (if related to bearing damage)

What to check

  • Visually inspect left front wheel area: sensor, tone ring, hub and bearing for damage or debris
  • Check sensor connector for corrosion, broken pins or water intrusion and ensure secure mating
  • Wiggle wiring harness from wheel to ABS module while monitoring fault or live sensor signal to find intermittent breaks
  • Scan tool: read ABS live data for left front wheel speed reading at key on and while rotating wheel
  • Measure sensor resistance and compare to factory specification (if specified)
  • Measure sensor output with an oscilloscope or multimeter (AC for VR, square wave for Hall) while rotating the wheel

Signal parameters

  • Sensor type: Hall-effect (digital) or variable reluctance (VR / inductive) depending on model year/trim
  • Hall-effect sensors: reference/supply typically provided by ABS module (commonly ~5 V) and output is a square wave that toggles between ~0 V and module supply voltage; frequency increases with wheel speed
  • Variable reluctance sensors: produce an AC voltage whose amplitude and frequency increase with wheel speed; no external supply required
  • Expected behavior: a clear, regular waveform proportional to wheel rotation; no output (open circuit) or constant value indicates a fault
  • Consult factory service manual for exact resistance, reference voltage and waveform specifications for the specific Alfa Romeo model

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve freeze frame and all ABS/traction codes. Note whether code is current or historic.
  2. Visually inspect the left front sensor, tone ring and wiring for obvious damage, debris, or corrosion. Clean if necessary.
  3. With ignition ON (engine off), backprobing the sensor connector: check for reference voltage (if Hall) and ground presence. Compare to known good circuit values.
  4. Measure sensor resistance (if VR type) with the connector disconnected. Compare to factory spec. Open or shorted measurement indicates faulty sensor or wiring.
  5. Rotate the wheel by hand or raise vehicle and spin wheel; monitor live wheel speed data with a scan tool. Left front should produce a speed/count similar to other wheels. If no signal, proceed to bench test sensor or wiggle test harness to find intermittent faults.
  6. Use an oscilloscope to view waveform while spinning wheel: look for clean square wave (Hall) or clean sinusoidal AC (VR). Irregular waveform may indicate damaged tone ring, excessive air gap, or sensor fault.
  7. If wiring fault suspected, perform a continuity check from sensor connector to ABS module pin and check for shorts to ground and battery. Repair any damaged wiring or connectors.
  8. Replace sensor or tone ring if defective. Replace wheel bearing if excessive play alters air gap.
  9. After repair, clear codes and perform road test to confirm proper operation and that the fault does not return.
  10. If all wiring and sensor verify good and problem persists, consider ABS control module diagnosis or replacement per factory procedures.

Likely causes

  • Damaged or disconnected sensor connector or harness at the left front
  • Faulty left front wheel speed sensor (contamination, cracked body, magnet loss)
  • Debris, rust or damaged tone ring on the left front hub
  • Intermittent wiring short to ground or open caused by steering/suspension movement

Fault status

⚠️ Status
ABS module detected an implausible or missing signal from the left front wheel speed sensor (left front wheel speed sensor circuit fault).
🟡 Repair difficulty: Medium
⏱️ Diagnostic time: 0.5-1.5 hours
