Causes

  • Failed/defective oil temperature sensor
  • Open or short in sensor wiring harness
  • Corroded, loose or contaminated sensor connector
  • Poor ground or reference voltage to the sensor
  • Oil contamination or sensor fouling
  • Faulty engine control module (rare)

Symptoms

  • Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) or warning lamp may illuminate
  • Incorrect or no oil temperature reading on instrument cluster
  • Engine or transmission control strategies altered (poor shifting, limp behavior) when oil temp signal is used
  • Possible reduced engine performance or drivability complaints when the control module uses a fallback strategy
  • Possible visible oil leak at sensor mounting (if gasket or threads failed)

What to check

  • Read freeze-frame and live data with an OBD2 scan tool; verify oil temperature value and whether it is stable or erratic
  • Confirm DTC is current vs stored; check for related codes (engine/transmission)
  • Visually inspect sensor and connector for oil, corrosion, broken pins, or physical damage
  • Wiggle test wiring and connector while monitoring live data to reproduce intermittent faults
  • Measure sensor resistance at ambient and compare to expected characteristic (see signal parameters)
  • Backprobe sensor harness to check reference voltage and signal voltage with ignition ON and while engine warms

Signal parameters

  • General type: temperature sensor (typically an NTC thermistor) — resistance decreases as temperature increases
  • Common output behavior: sensor is read by the module as a voltage (approx. 0.1–4.9 V across the operating range)
  • Approximate resistance examples (manufacturer-specific; confirm with service manual): ~2–3 kΩ at 20°C, ~200–500 Ω at 100°C (values vary by part)
  • Expected live-data temperature range: -40°C to +150°C depending on sensor specification; check for implausible fixed values (e.g., extreme high/low or 0°C)
  • Reference supply typically a stable pull-up or reference voltage from the module — verify per vehicle wiring diagram

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve DTC and freeze-frame data with a scan tool. Note related codes and operating conditions when the code set.
  2. Perform a visual inspection of the oil temperature sensor, harness, and connector for damage, oil ingress, corrosion, and secure mounting.
  3. With ignition OFF, disconnect the sensor connector and inspect pins for corrosion or bent pins. Repair or clean as needed.
  4. Measure sensor resistance at the sensor body with a digital multimeter and compare to expected resistance vs temperature (if possible, measure at known ambient temperature).
  5. With connector connected, backprobe the signal and reference wires. With ignition ON and engine cold, verify reference voltage (or pull-up) and that signal voltage corresponds to ambient temperature. Monitor while warming engine for a smooth change.
  6. Check wiring continuity between sensor connector and engine/ECM connector; check for shorts to ground or battery.
  7. If electrical checks are good but signal still implausible, replace the oil temperature sensor and clear codes.
  8. After repair, perform a test drive or warm-up cycle while monitoring live data to confirm proper temperature reading and that the code does not return.
  9. If code returns after replacing sensor and verifying wiring, consider module input fault and consult factory wiring diagrams and technical service bulletins.

Likely causes

  • Sensor electrical failure
  • Damaged wiring near sensor (heat/chafing)
  • Connector corrosion or oil ingress
  • Intermittent pin contact at harness or module
