Causes

  • DTCs stored in ABS/ESP and/or airbag modules

What to check

  • Read and record all stored DTCs and freeze-frame data from ABS/ESP and airbag modules
  • Verify vehicle battery voltage is within nominal range
  • Visual inspection of steering column area, clock spring, sensor connectors and wiring harness for damage, chafing or corrosion
  • Check for recent steering, airbag, or wheel replacements or alignment work
  • Confirm whether steering angle sensor calibration (SAS) has been performed after repairs

Signal parameters

  • Reference/power supply to steering angle sensor(s) present (typically ignition-switched 5 V or 12 V depending on design)
  • Ground continuity between sensor(s) and chassis ground
  • Steering wheel angle output(s) change smoothly and proportionally with wheel rotation (live data shows angles in degrees)
  • Two sensor outputs should agree within a few degrees; large disagreement or one output stuck indicates fault
  • Signal update rate consistent and steady (tens of Hz)
  • No excessive electrical noise, intermittent dropouts or stuck values

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a compatible diagnostic tool to read C1277 and any related codes; record freeze frame and live data for steering angle 1 and 2
  2. Inspect connectors and wiring at both steering angle sensor(s), clock spring, and ABS/ESP module for corrosion, bent pins, water ingress or physical damage
  3. With ignition on, verify supply voltage and ground at the sensor connector(s) using a multimeter; compare to manufacturer specifications
  4. Use scan tool live data: slowly turn steering wheel and confirm both steering angle channel values change smoothly and track together; note any channel that does not move or lags
  5. Perform a wiggle test on steering column harness and clock spring while observing live data for intermittent faults
  6. Check continuity and resistance of signal, reference and ground wires between sensor connector and ABS/ESP module; repair any opens/shorts found
  7. If wiring and connectors are good, swap or bench-test the steering angle sensor(s) if possible (or replace with known-good) and recheck
  8. Inspect and test CAN bus if sensor communicates over CAN; check for other CAN errors or module faults
  9. After repair or sensor replacement, perform steering angle sensor calibration/initialization per manufacturer procedure and then clear codes and test drive to verify DTC does not return
  10. If fault persists after sensor and wiring verified, consider ABS/ESP module diagnostic or software update by dealer
