Causes

  • Open or shorted wiring between sensor and ABS/ESC module
  • Corroded, loose, or damaged sensor connector
  • Failed brake fluid pressure sensor (internal fault)
  • Poor or missing ground or reference voltage to sensor
  • Low brake fluid level or air in brake lines causing abnormal sensor reading
  • Water ingress or contamination at connector

Symptoms

  • ABS warning lamp and/or traction control/ESC lamp illuminated
  • Possible reduced ABS/traction function or disabled ABS
  • Brake pedal may feel unchanged or firmer/softer depending on condition
  • Stored/active DTCs related to brake pressure or ABS system
  • Possible diagnostic trouble codes in multiple ABS-related channels

What to check

  • Read all ABS/ESC codes and freeze-frame data with a scan tool; note related codes
  • Visually inspect sensor wiring and connector for damage, corrosion, or loose pins
  • Check brake fluid level and condition; top up to correct level if low
  • Backprobe sensor connector and verify reference voltage, ground, and signal with key on
  • Wiggle test harness while monitoring live data to find intermittent faults
  • Check for continuity and shorts to battery/ground between sensor and module

Signal parameters

  • Sensor typically uses a 5 V reference and ground from ABS/ESC module (reference ≈ 4.5–5.5 V).
  • Signal is generally an analog voltage proportional to pressure (varies 0–5 V depending on design); signal voltage should change smoothly with applied brake pressure.
  • Resistance or millivolt output depends on sensor type — consult vehicle service manual for exact values.
  • No signal, a steady out-of-range voltage, or a noisy/intermittent waveform indicates a fault.

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve and record ABS/ESC codes and freeze-frame data. Note when the fault occurred and any associated codes.
  2. Perform a visual inspection of sensor, harness, and connector at the brake pressure sensor location. Repair any obvious damage.
  3. Verify brake fluid level and inspect master cylinder and lines for leaks or recent work that may have introduced air.
  4. Backprobe the sensor connector with the ignition ON (engine off) and measure: reference voltage, ground continuity, and sensor signal voltage. Compare to service specifications if available.
  5. With a scan tool, monitor live brake pressure sensor data while an assistant applies the brake pedal (or apply pressure with a diagnostic pressure tool). Confirm signal changes smoothly and corresponds to pedal pressure.
  6. If reference voltage or ground missing, trace wiring to the ABS/ESC module and repair shorts/opens. Check associated fuses and module grounds.
  7. If wiring and power/ground are good but signal is out-of-range or non-responsive, replace the brake fluid pressure sensor following manufacturer procedure.
  8. After repairs, clear codes, perform required bleed procedure if sensor or hydraulic components were opened, and road-test to verify the fault does not return and ABS/ESC lamps remain off.
  9. If fault persists after sensor and wiring verified, consider ABS/ESC module diagnostic and consult manufacturer service information for module testing/reprogramming.

Likely causes

  • Wiring harness damage or connector corrosion (most common)
  • Faulty pressure sensor
  • Low brake fluid level or air in system affecting sensor reading
  • Intermittent connection at sensor harness
  • Less likely: internal ABS module driver fault

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Brake Fluid Pressure Sensor Circuit — open/short/out-of-range or intermittent. ABS/Traction control may be disabled until repair.
