Causes

  • Blown fuse or faulty relay for ABS pump power or control circuit
  • Open or shorted wiring in the pump motor request/control circuit
  • Corroded, loose, or damaged connector at ABS pump motor or module
  • Failed ABS pump motor (stator/brushes or winding open)
  • Faulty ABS control module or internal driver transistor
  • Poor ground at pump motor or ABS module

Symptoms

  • ABS warning lamp illuminated (may be steady)
  • Traction control / StabiliTrak warning lamp illuminated
  • Loss of ABS function; ABS does not activate during braking events
  • No audible pump motor noise when ABS commanded
  • Possible altered brake pedal feel during ABS events
  • Vehicle may disable traction/ABS features or enter limp mode

What to check

  • Retrieve all ABS and related codes with a capable scan tool; record freeze frame and status bits
  • Visually inspect ABS pump motor connector, harness, fuses, and relay for damage, corrosion, or loose pins
  • Check related fuses and relays for continuity and correct operation
  • Backprobe pump motor connector and ABS module command connector with ignition ON and while commanding pump from scan tool
  • Measure supply voltage at pump motor power pin (should be near battery voltage)
  • Measure resistance of pump motor winding with battery disconnected

Signal parameters

  • Battery voltage on pump power feed typically ~12–14 V with ignition ON or during pump run
  • Pump motor request/control circuit often a switched ground or PWM from ABS module — inactive ~battery voltage, active ~0–1 V (ground) or PWM 0–100% (varies by model)
  • Pump motor coil resistance (typical small DC motor) usually low — commonly in the range of ~1–10 Ω (vehicle-specific)
  • When commanded, current draw should rise (motor run current) — near zero indicates open circuit, very high indicates shorted motor or locked rotor
  • If PWM is used, frequency commonly 50–500 Hz (vehicle-specific)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Read and record C1293 and any related codes; note freeze-frame and ignition state. Do not assume a new control module is required.
  2. Perform a visual inspection of ABS pump, connector, wiring harness, and grounding points for damage or corrosion. Repair obvious issues.
  3. Check fuses and relays for the ABS pump circuit; replace unknown/faulty items and retest.
  4. With battery connected and ignition ON, backprobe the pump power and control pins at the pump connector. Verify battery voltage on power feed and proper resting voltage on control pin.
  5. Use a scan tool to command the ABS pump while monitoring the control circuit. Observe control pin behavior: it should switch (ground or PWM) when commanded. If no command from module, check module outputs and wiring.
  6. If module commands pump but pump does not run, measure current draw at pump power feed. Low/zero current suggests open circuit or bad motor; very high current suggests short/locked motor.
  7. With battery disconnected, measure pump motor winding resistance and continuity to ground. An open or infinite resistance indicates failed motor windings; short to ground indicates internal short.
  8. Perform continuity check from ABS module connector to pump connector on the request/control circuit to find opens or shorts; repair harness or connectors as needed.
  9. After repairs, clear codes and perform pump activation tests and a road test to confirm code does not return.
  10. If wiring, power, and motor are verified good but C1293 returns, suspect ABS control module internal driver failure — confirm with module bench tests or replacement as last resort.
  11. Document repairs and recheck for stored codes and system functionality.

Likely causes

  • Blown fuse or faulty relay
  • Corroded or loose connector at pump motor/ABS module
  • Open or short in pump motor request wiring
  • Failed ABS pump motor
  • Faulty ABS control module
