Causes

  • Damaged or failed ABS hydraulic pressure sensor
  • Open, shorted or corroded wiring or connectors between sensor and ABS module
  • Poor or missing sensor ground or reference supply (fuse, relay, wiring)
  • Water ingress, contamination or physical damage to sensor or harness
  • Faulty ABS hydraulic unit / pressure sensor integrated in modulator
  • ABS control module internal fault or software/communication error

Symptoms

  • ABS warning lamp illuminated (and possibly DSC/traction control lamp)
  • ABS/ESC functions may be disabled or limited
  • Brake pedal feel may change under heavy braking (reduced ABS intervention)
  • Diagnostic trouble codes stored and live pressure sensor data abnormal or missing
  • In some cases brake assist or stability control warnings

What to check

  • Read stored and pending codes plus freeze frame data with a qualified scan tool; note related ABS/ESC codes
  • Visually inspect wiring harness, connector and sensor for damage, corrosion, fluid contamination or loose pins
  • Check fuses and relays supplying ABS/ESC module and sensor reference power
  • Using a multimeter/oscilloscope check sensor reference voltage, ground continuity and signal voltage at the connector with ignition ON (do not short pins)
  • Monitor live data from the ABS pressure sensor while operating the brake pedal or using a pressure tester to confirm plausibility
  • Perform wiggle test on harness while watching live data or DTC status to look for intermittent faults

Signal parameters

  • Reference supply: typically 5 V reference (confirm with OEM data)
  • Signal output: typically 0.5–4.5 V proportional to hydraulic pressure (0 V or stuck high indicates fault)
  • Expected behavior: signal should change smoothly with brake pedal pressure; no sudden dropouts or spikes
  • Resistance/continuity: wiring to module should show near 0 Ω to ground/return pins and proper resistance between signal and reference per OEM spec (check service manual)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve all ABS/ESC DTCs and freeze frame data. Record before clearing codes.
  2. Visually inspect sensor, connector and harness for damage, corrosion, water ingress or contamination. Repair as needed.
  3. With connector disconnected, check for correct reference voltage and ground at the harness connector (refer to OEM spec).
  4. Back-probe signal wire and monitor live voltage while an assistant applies the brake pedal; verify signal varies smoothly within expected voltage range. Note any dropouts or fixed readings.
  5. Perform continuity checks: sensor connector to ABS module pins, and check for short to battery positive or ground.
  6. If wiring and supply are OK, bench-test or replace the hydraulic pressure sensor (or replace the ABS hydraulic unit if sensor is integrated) and clear codes.
  7. After replacement, recheck live data, erase codes and conduct road test including ABS activations if safe to do so (brake test on low-traction surface or per service procedure).
  8. If new sensor does not correct the issue and wiring is good, evaluate ABS control module functionality, grounds and internal faults — consult OEM module diagnostics and consider module replacement or reprogramming.
  9. Follow OEM procedures for any hydraulic bleeding or system initialization steps after repairs if required.

Likely causes

  • Corroded connector pins at the hydraulic pressure sensor
  • Broken/shorted wiring in harness near suspension/engine harness grommet
  • Failed hydraulic pressure sensor (internal element)
  • Fault in ABS modulator when sensor is integrated into assembly

Fault status

⚠️ Status
ABS hydraulic pressure sensor circuit fault — ABS/ESC control module detecting invalid, missing or out-of-range hydraulic pressure sensor signal; ABS/traction may be disabled.
🟡 Repair difficulty: Medium
⏱️ Diagnostic time: 1.0-3.0 hours
