Causes
- Open, short, or high-resistance condition on the Class 2 serial data wire or associated connectors
- Poor battery voltage or weak/unstable charging system
- Corroded, loose, or damaged connector(s) at PCM or other network modules
- Faulty PCM or another module on the Class 2 bus causing bus contention
- Blown fuse or faulty relay supplying power to modules on the bus
- Aftermarket device (alarm, remote start, stereo) improperly connected to data or power circuits
Symptoms
- Multiple warning lights (check engine, ABS, traction control, or other module lamps) or network-related lamp illumination
- Intermittent or complete loss of communication with the PCM on a scan tool
- Multiple, apparently unrelated DTCs stored for different modules
- Erratic module behavior (intermittent features, communication timeouts)
- Possible drivability issues if PCM commands are missing or delayed
What to check
- Use a capable scan tool to read all stored codes from all modules; note any other U or C codes
- Verify and record battery voltage with key ON and engine OFF (should be within manufacturer spec)
- Inspect fuses and relays that feed the PCM and other network modules
- Visually inspect the PCM connector(s) and other module connectors for corrosion, bent pins, or damage
- Check for aftermarket devices connected to data, power, or ground circuits
- Backprobe the Class 2 data line and observe for activity with a scan tool, data bus monitor, or lab scope
Signal parameters
- Class 2 serial data should show digital data traffic when key is ON (modules exchanging messages)
- Data line must not be shorted to constant battery, to ground, or show continuous steady voltage
- Voltage/transitions and waveform characteristics should match manufacturer specifications — measure with scope or data bus monitor
- No excessive noise or repeated collisions on the bus; generally a single-wire serial traffic pattern when healthy
- Presence/absence of messages and error frames are diagnostic — compare to known-good vehicle or factory data
Diagnostic algorithm
- Retrieve and record all codes from PCM and other modules. Note freeze-frame and any U codes. Do not replace parts yet.
- Verify battery state-of-charge and charging system. Recharge or replace battery if low. Retest.
- Inspect fuses/relays related to the PCM and network modules; replace any open/failed fuses.
- Visually inspect PCM and other network module connectors for corrosion, bent pins, water intrusion, or damaged seals; repair as needed.
- Use a scan tool or data bus monitor to observe Class 2 activity with key ON. If there is no activity, check power and ground feeds to modules on the bus.
- Backprobe the Class 2 data line at the PCM and other modules. Use a lab scope to verify proper serial waveform and to look for shorts or excessive noise.
- If bus is shorted or shows no activity, isolate sections: disconnect nonessential modules (one at a time) to identify a faulty module pulling the bus down or creating noise.
- Repair wiring faults (chafed harness, damaged insulation, corroded connectors) or replace connector pins per manufacturer procedures.
- Replace suspected faulty module only after wiring and other modules have been isolated and tested. Reflash/update PCM software if directed by OEM service information.
- Clear codes and perform full system verify drive cycle, recheck for reoccurrence and confirm normal module communication.
Likely causes
- Loose/damaged connector or wiring at PCM or network connector (most common)
- Loss of battery/ignition power to one or more modules on the Class 2 bus
- Faulty module on the network pulling the bus low or causing noise
- Corrosion or water intrusion at harness splice or connector
- Failed PCM (least common after wiring/modules ruled out)
Fault status
Status
PCM Class 2 Serial Data Link Malfunction — PCM detects absent or invalid Class 2 serial data messages on the vehicle data bus.
Repair difficulty: Medium
Diagnostic time: 1.5-4.0 hours
