Causes

  • Internal ECU component failure (processor, memory, power regulation)
  • Intermittent or low battery/charging system voltage
  • Poor power or ground connections, corroded or loose pins
  • Water intrusion or physical damage to the module
  • CAN/LIN bus wiring short, open, or missing termination
  • Failed connectors or damaged wiring harness

Symptoms

  • MIL/warning lamp(s) illuminated (may be ECU-specific cluster message)
  • One or more vehicle systems controlled by that ECU not functioning or intermittent
  • Loss of communication with the module on a diagnostic scanner
  • Erratic or frozen data from that ECU
  • Vehicle may enter limp mode or disable features tied to the faulty ECU

What to check

  • Read and record all stored DTCs and freeze-frame data with a capable Hyundai scan tool
  • Verify battery state-of-charge and charging system voltage under load
  • Inspect ECU connector(s) and wiring for corrosion, bent pins, water intrusion or physical damage
  • Check related fuses and relays; wiggle-test harness while watching scanner for changes
  • Verify power and ground at the ECU with a multimeter (backprobe pins)
  • Check CAN/LIN bus wiring for continuity, shorts to ground or +12V, and proper termination

Signal parameters

  • Primary battery/supply to ECU: approx. 11–14.5 V (verify stable with key ON/engine running)
  • Ground continuity: low resistance to chassis ground (near 0 ohms)
  • CAN bus idle voltages: verify expected voltages per OEM (check CANH/CANL differential and idle levels)
  • Diagnostic communication: presence/absence of module responses and message frames
  • Fuse/relay supply voltage presence with IGN ON

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a full-function Hyundai/OEM scan tool. Read all codes and note the time, ignition state, and freeze frame data.
  2. Confirm code is current (not historic). Clear codes, cycle ignition, and see if C160449 returns.
  3. Inspect the ECU and harness visually for moisture, corrosion, physical damage, or loose connectors.
  4. Check battery voltage and charging system; verify stable supply under load. Repair battery/charging faults first.
  5. Backprobe and measure ECU power and ground pins with key ON; verify proper voltages and low ground resistance.
  6. Check fuses and relays that supply the ECU; replace if suspect and re-test communications.
  7. Verify CAN/LIN bus health: check for proper termination, measure CANH/CANL idle voltages, and monitor bus traffic for errors.
  8. If supply/ground and bus are good but communication fails or error persists, attempt to reflash/reprogram ECU with latest OEM firmware per service procedure.
  9. If reflashing fails or the ECU still reports a hardware error after confirming wiring and power, replace the ECU with a new/reconditioned unit and perform required programming/initialization.
  10. After repair or replacement, clear codes, perform relearns/calibrations and road-test to confirm issue resolved.

Likely causes

  • Open or high-resistance ground at the ECU
  • Blown or weak fuse/relay supplying ECU
  • Damaged ECU from water ingress or impact
  • Internal ECU power regulator or capacitor failure
  • Loss of CAN communication due to bus fault

Fault status

⚠️ Status
