Causes

  • Open or short in the left rear wheel speed sensor wiring harness
  • Corroded, loose or damaged connector at sensor or ABS module
  • Failed left rear wheel speed (corner) sensor
  • Damaged reluctor/target ring or excessive air gap between sensor and tone ring
  • Faulty ABS/DSC control module or module connector pin fault
  • Water intrusion or contamination at the sensor connector

Symptoms

  • ABS and/or DSC/traction control warning lamp illuminated
  • Loss of ABS/traction control functionality or limited stability control
  • Possible ABS pump/motor activation at low speeds or during braking
  • Inconsistent or missing wheel speed readout in live data for left rear
  • Brake/drive feel may be normal when ABS is not active

What to check

  • Read and record codes and freeze/frame data with a diagnostic scanner; note any related codes
  • Visually inspect left rear sensor, connector and wiring for damage, corrosion or water
  • Check connector seating and continuity between sensor connector and ABS module pins
  • Measure sensor DC resistance (if applicable) and compare to factory range
  • Spin wheel and observe sensor output with multimeter (AC) or oscilloscope (preferred)
  • Check for damaged or missing tone/reluctor teeth and correct air gap

Signal parameters

  • Passive (variable reluctance) sensor: DC resistance typically in the low hundreds to low thousands of ohms — varies by vehicle; AC output when wheel rotates: tens to several hundred millivolts at low speed, rising with speed
  • Active (Hall/electronic) sensor: reference supply usually ~5 V or ~12 V; output is a square wave ~0–5 V or pulsed signal around reference when wheel turns
  • At rest: passive sensor = ~0 V output; active sensor = static reference voltage (≈2.5–5 V depending on design)
  • Oscilloscope: clean, regular sine/AC pulses (VR) or clean square pulses (Hall) with amplitude/frequency proportional to wheel speed
  • Always compare measured values to factory specifications for the specific Land Rover model

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a diagnostic scanner, read codes and live data. Confirm C1700 and note any accompanying ABS/DSC codes.
  2. Visually inspect the left rear sensor, connector, wiring route, and tone ring for damage, corrosion, contamination or loose connectors.
  3. With ignition on (engine off), backprobe the sensor connector: verify reference supply for active sensors and check ground continuity.
  4. Measure sensor resistance at the connector (for passive sensors) and compare to specification. If out of range, replace sensor.
  5. Spin the wheel and measure AC output (passive) with a multimeter or inspect waveform with an oscilloscope; expect increasing amplitude/frequency with speed.
  6. Wiggle the harness while monitoring live data or oscilloscope to check for intermittent faults; repair any broken wires or poor crimps.
  7. Inspect the tone/reluctor ring for missing/damaged teeth and ensure correct air gap; correct or replace as needed.
  8. If sensor and wiring check good, swap with a known-good identical sensor from another corner and see if the code follows the sensor.
  9. If code remains and wiring verified, check ABS/DSC module connector pins for damage and test continuity from module to sensor connector. Repair or replace module only after wiring and sensor eliminated.
  10. Clear codes and perform a road test to verify repair. Re-scan to confirm code does not return.

Likely causes

  • Damaged or corroded sensor connector/wiring (most common)
  • Failed left rear wheel speed sensor
  • Damaged tone/reluctor ring or wrong sensor gap
  • Intermittent wiring break inside harness near wheel
  • ABS module input/connector fault (less common)
