Causes

What to check

  • Visually inspect sensor connector for bent pins, corrosion, water/dirt intrusion and secure locking tab.
  • Backprobe sensor connector with ignition ON and measure voltages at the supply and signal pins with a multimeter.
  • Measure resistance/continuity between the suspected sensor supply/signal wire and battery positive to confirm a short.
  • Perform wiggle test on harness/connector while monitoring live data for intermittent changes.

Signal parameters

  • Supply voltage: ~12 V (battery voltage) on the sensor power pin with ignition ON if circuit is powered.
  • Signal/trigger line: depending on sensor type, may be a pulsed echo or switched return — should not be constant battery voltage.
  • Resistance to battery positive: low resistance if shorted; normal high resistance/open circuit when disconnected.
  • Module fault flags: parking aid module will report sensor status (OK/Short to battery/Open circuit) via scan tool.

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect an advanced scan tool, read DTCs, and view live data for the right rear sensor and related nodes. Record freeze frame if present.
  2. Visually inspect the right rear bumper, sensor, wiring and connector for damage, water ingress, corrosion, dirt or pinched wiring. Repair obvious physical damage.
  3. With ignition ON (engine off), backprobe the sensor connector: measure supply pin voltage and signal pin voltage. Compare to expected (~12 V supply, variable signal).
  4. If supply pin is at battery voltage where it should not be, isolate the harness: disconnect the sensor and re-measure at the harness side. If the harness still measures battery, the short is upstream; if it disappears, suspect sensor internal short.
  5. Check continuity/resistance from the sensor power/signal wire to battery positive. Low resistance indicates a short to battery. Also check for continuity to chassis ground where applicable.
  6. Perform a wiggle test on the harness/connector while monitoring live data or voltage to identify intermittent shorts.
  7. If wiring looks good and harness side voltage is normal with sensor disconnected, replace the sensor and re-test. If the short remains with the sensor disconnected, trace wiring back toward harness, fuse box, and junctions to locate the contact point with battery feed.
  8. Repair any damaged wiring or connector (repair or replace harness/connector pins with OEM-recommended methods). Protect repaired section with conduit/loom and secure to avoid future chafing.
  9. Clear codes and perform functional test / drive cycle. Verify code does not return and parking aid functions correctly.
  10. If the issue persists after sensor and wiring repairs, inspect the parking aid/control module for internal faults and consult manufacturer service information before replacing.
