Causes

What to check

  • Visual inspection of relay, relay socket, wiring harness and nearby ground points for damage, corrosion or loose terminals
  • Check related fuses for continuity
  • Wiggle test harness with scan tool connected to see if code is intermittent
  • Confirm no aftermarket devices connected to suspension wiring

Signal parameters

  • Control circuit voltage with ignition ON, relay not commanded: approx. 0 V (no feed) or as specified by factory (low)
  • Control circuit voltage when commanded ON: ~12 V (or specified supply voltage) at driver input if driver is high-side; if low-side driver expected, coil supply should be ~battery voltage and control pin switches to ground
  • Relay coil resistance (bench): typical automotive relay coils often ~50–200 ohms (refer to factory spec for exact)
  • Expected continuity: no direct short to chassis ground on control feed or driver output when circuit not commanded
  • Module output driver resistance to ground when inactive: high (open); when commanded, low only through intended circuit

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve all related codes and freeze-frame data with a suitable scan tool; note whether code is current or historic and whether other suspension/ABS codes are present.
  2. Visually inspect the damper control relay, relay socket, wiring harness routing, connectors and adjacent ground points for damage, corrosion, loose terminals or signs of overheating.
  3. With ignition OFF and battery negative disconnected if required for safety, unplug the damper control relay. Inspect socket terminals for corrosion, melted plastic or a crushed terminal.
  4. Perform a continuity/resistance check between the relay control pin in the harness and chassis ground. There should not be a direct short (very low ohms). If continuity to ground exists, trace wiring toward the module and harness to locate the short.
  5. With the relay removed and harness reconnected or backprobing per factory procedures, measure the voltage at the relay control terminal with ignition ON and with the module commanding the relay ON via a scan tool. Compare to expected voltages (see signal_params).
  6. If control driver is shorted to ground (low with no command), disconnect harness at the control module and re-check continuity to ground. If short remains on harness side, repair wiring/connector. If short disappears when module disconnected, suspect module driver fault.
  7. Swap in a known-good OEM relay (if available) and clear codes. Re-test to confirm whether code returns. Do not use unknown aftermarket relays for diagnosis if specs differ.
  8. Repair any damaged wiring, corroded terminals, or poor grounds. Replace the relay if internally shorted. If module driver is faulty, follow manufacturer procedures for module replacement or repair.
  9. After repairs, clear codes and road test to confirm repair. Re-scan for codes and ensure the damper system operates normally.

  • Chafed wire contacting body or frame near harness routing
  • Relay stuck internally with coil or control pin shorted to ground
  • Corroded connector pin at relay socket or suspension module
  • Short at a splice or ground junction in the damper control circuit
