Cooling control unit fault

Causes

  • Failed cooling fan control module (internal electronics)
  • Open/shorted wiring harness to cooling control unit
  • Corroded or loose connector pins at module or relay/fuse box
  • Blown fuse or failed relay supplying the cooling control unit or fan motor
  • Failed cooling fan motor or high current draw due to mechanical obstruction
  • Faulty coolant temperature sensor providing incorrect temp data

Symptoms

  • Cooling fans do not operate when engine is hot or A/C is on
  • Cooling fans run constantly or erratically
  • Engine overheating or rising coolant temperature
  • A/C blower/performance reduced due to fan not operating correctly
  • Dashboard temperature warning light or message
  • Stored MIL or specific cooling system warning codes

What to check

  • Retrieve all stored and pending DTCs and freeze-frame data with a capable scan tool
  • Check battery voltage and health (while key on and during fan command)
  • Inspect fuses and relays for cooling fan and control unit; verify continuity and correct fuse value
  • Visually inspect wiring and connectors at the cooling control unit, fans and associated relays for corrosion, damage or loose pins
  • Use scan tool to command fans ON/OFF and observe module responses and fan operation
  • Monitor live data: coolant temperature, fan status, fan speed/current, control unit status and any communication errors

Signal parameters

  • Supply voltage to cooling control unit: battery voltage ~12.0–14.5 V (key on/engine running)
  • Ground continuity: near 0 Ω to chassis ground from module ground pin
  • Fan control output: PWM duty 0–100% or switched 0 V / battery (depends on vehicle)
  • PWM frequency (if used): typically tens to a few hundred Hz (manufacturer-specific)
  • Cooling fan motor current: nominal several amps up to ~20–40 A depending on fan; large spikes indicate seizure
  • Coolant temperature sensor: typical voltage 0.5–4.5 V depending on temp (refer to FIAT-specific values)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Read and record all DTCs, freeze frame and live data. Do not replace parts before verification.
  2. With key on, visually inspect fuses/relays for fan and cooling control unit; verify fuse integrity and relay operation.
  3. Inspect connectors and wiring for corrosion, breaks, or pin damage at the cooling control unit and fan connectors.
  4. Use scan tool to command fan(s) ON and OFF; note whether control unit sends commands and if fans respond.
  5. Measure supply voltage and ground at the cooling control unit with key on and during fan command; confirm stable battery voltage and good ground.
  6. Measure fan motor resistance and perform a direct, fused bench test to see if motor runs and to measure current draw; replace motor if seized or draws excessive current.
  7. Check for communication errors on CAN/LIN; if lost communication, trace bus wiring and terminators; check other modules for related errors.
  8. If wiring, fuses, relays and fans check OK but the control unit fails to respond or shows internal errors, consider module reset/reflash via dealer-level diagnostic tool; update software if available.
  9. If module still fails after software update and wiring verified, replace cooling control unit. Use correct programming/re-coding procedures if required by FIAT.
  10. Clear codes, perform road test to verify cooling operation and monitor for return of P1519.

Likely causes

  • Intermittent or poor connector/corroded wiring to the cooling control unit
  • Blown fuse or relays feeding the fan control module
  • Failed cooling fan control unit
  • Failed fan motor causing overload and tripping module protection

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Fault detected in cooling control unit (fan control module) — internal error, loss of communication, or incorrect operation reported. Check power, ground, wiring, communication bus and fan unit.
