Causes
- Intermittent or low battery/charging system voltage
- Blown fuse or lost power to ABS/ESP control module
- Faulty ABS/ESP control module
- Damaged or dirty wheel speed sensor(s) or tone ring
- Faulty steering angle sensor or incorrect steering angle calibration
- Faulty yaw rate/acceleration sensor
Symptoms
- ESP/ESC warning lamp illuminated on dash
- ABS and/or traction control warning lights may also be on
- Possible loss or disablement of traction/stability control functions
- Intermittent fault—warnings may appear after startup or under specific driving conditions
- Reduced braking assistance or abnormal brake modulators behavior (rare)
What to check
- Read live data and stored freeze-frame with a capable scan tool supporting FIAT ESP/ABS modules
- Record and note any accompanying ABS, wheel speed (C-code) or communication (U-code) DTCs
- Check battery voltage at rest and during cranking (expect ~12.4–12.8 V at rest, >13.5 V when charging)
- Inspect main fuses and relays for ABS/ESP power and ground integrity
- Visually inspect ABS/ESP module and sensor connectors for corrosion, bent pins or water ingress
- Check wheel speed sensor tone rings for debris, damage or missing teeth
Signal parameters
- Battery/charging voltage: ~11.5–14.8 V (see manufacturer spec)
- Wheel speed sensors: pulsed AC or digital frequency proportional to wheel speed (Hz) or vehicle speed (kph)
- Steering angle sensor: angle (degrees) and steering rate (deg/s) within expected range and centered at straight-ahead
- Yaw rate sensor: deg/s values change with vehicle yaw; should read near 0 at rest
- Brake pressure sensor: hydraulic pressure (bar/psi) changes when braking
- CAN bus: module present and transmitting/receiving defined messages (no CAN errors)
Diagnostic algorithm
- Ensure safety: vehicle parked, ignition on (as required), parking brake set.
- Connect full-function scan tool and read all stored and pending DTCs from engine, ABS/ESP and gateway modules; save freeze-frame data.
- Note any related codes (wheel speed sensors, communication U-codes, low voltage P-codes) and address those first if present.
- Check battery voltage and charging system; repair/replace battery or charging if voltage is out of range. Verify battery terminals and grounds are clean and tight.
- Inspect fuses/relays supplying the ABS/ESP module; replace any blown fuses and retest.
- Visually inspect ABS/ESP module and sensor harnesses/connectors for corrosion, damaged insulation, chafing or pin damage. Wiggle-test connectors while monitoring for communication drops.
- With wheels off the ground, rotate each wheel and observe wheel speed sensor signals (live data or oscilloscope). Replace or clean sensors/tone rings if signals are missing or noisy.
- Verify steering angle sensor output: center the steering, compare steering-angle value to expected zero or perform sensor basic setting/calibration per manufacturer procedure.
- Check yaw rate sensor outputs with vehicle on a lift or during a controlled road test and compare to expected behavior; replace sensor if output is implausible.
- If CAN communication problems exist (U0121, Uxxxx), trace wiring to gateway and ABS module, measure CAN bus voltages and resistance, repair bus faults.
- If module diagnostics point to an internal ABS/ESP control unit failure after power/inputs/wiring verified, consider module repair or replacement and program/configure as required by FIAT procedures.
- Clear codes and perform road test to confirm repair; re-scan for recurrence.
Likely causes
- Low battery or poor battery connections causing module brown-out
- Corroded connector or broken wire to wheel speed sensor(s)
- Failed steering angle sensor or out-of-range steering sensor value (needs recalibration)
- ABS/ESP module internal fault or failed power supply
Fault status
Status
ESP/ESC system fault detected. Stability/traction control may be disabled; ABS/ESP warning lamp illuminated. Further diagnosis required to identify sensor, wiring, communication or module fault.
Repair difficulty: Medium
Diagnostic time: 0.5-3.0 hours
