What to check

  • Connect a scan tool and read all U-codes and freeze frame data from all modules
  • Verify whether multiple modules report the same U0538 or related network errors
  • Inspect audio module connector and harness for corrosion, bent pins, or damage
  • Check module power and ground voltages at the audio module connector
  • Measure CAN/LIN bus voltages and observe waveform with a scope or scan-tool bus monitor
  • Verify CAN termination resistance (approx. 60 ohms between CAN High and Low at key-off)

Diagnostic algorithm

  2. Confirm whether the fault is repeatable: clear codes, operate the audio system, and monitor for reappearance.
  3. Visually inspect the Digital Audio Control Module C connector and harness for damage, corrosion, or water ingress; repair as needed.
  4. With key on (engine off), verify module supply voltage and ground at the module connector; repair poor power/ground before further testing.
  5. Use a scan tool capable of network traffic view or a scope to monitor the audio module message ID, DLC, and payload on the bus; compare to expected values or a known-good vehicle if available.
  6. Measure CAN High/Low idle voltages and differential, and check termination resistance; repair shorts or missing termination.
  7. If bus noise or corrupted frames are present, isolate sections of the bus by disconnecting nodes (including aftermarket devices) to find the offending device or harness segment.
  8. Check for software updates or calibration issues for the audio module; reflash or reprogram the module per factory procedure if required.
  9. If wiring, connectors and supply are good and problem persists, consider module replacement; verify proper programming and configuration after replacement.
  10. After repairs, clear codes and perform full functional test of audio and related systems; monitor the network for recurrence.
