Causes
- Faulty DMS module (hardware or firmware)
- Intermittent or failed CAN/LIN/FlexRay network communication
- Damaged wiring or poor connector connection to the DMS
- Corrupt or out-of-date module software/calibration
- Low supply voltage or poor ground at the DMS
- Electromagnetic interference on the vehicle network
Symptoms
- Driver-monitoring warning or message on instrument cluster
- Reduced or disabled features that depend on DMS (e.g., driver attention alerts, camera-based seatbelt or occupant monitoring)
- Persistent U05B4 fault stored in network gateway or host module
- Intermittent operation of driver-monitoring features
- Possible related ADAS messages reduced or flagged as unavailable
What to check
- Read all U-codes and DMS-specific codes using a capable scan tool; record freeze frame and DTC history
- Check for additional network communication codes (CAN bus errors, lost comms)
- Visually inspect DMS module, camera and connectors for corrosion, damage or water ingress
- Verify DMS power and ground voltages with ignition on and during fault conditions
- Check wiring continuity and resistance on DMS CAN/LIN/MOST lines and shield if present
- Confirm vehicle and module software/firmware levels; check for Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs)
Signal parameters
- Message ID and PGN (module transmit ID)
- Data length code (DLC) and expected payload length
- Message frequency / transmit interval (Hz or ms)
- Checksum or CRC field validity
- Expected value ranges for key fields (e.g., driver present flag, gaze/confidence value)
- Sequence number or timestamp rollover behavior
Diagnostic algorithm
- Connect a full-function scan tool and capture all stored and pending DTCs and freeze-frame data from the DMS and gateway hosts.
- Note when the fault occurs (ignition state, after drive cycles, after module reflash). Check for related network or power faults.
- Visually inspect DMS connectors, wiring harness, and camera mounting. Repair any damaged insulation, corrosion or pin damage.
- Verify proper battery voltage and clean reliable ground at the DMS module. Measure supply at module harness connector with load applied.
- Use an oscilloscope or CAN/LIN analyzer at the DMS connector to confirm the module is transmitting messages and that frames match OEM expected ID, length, timing and CRC.
- If messages are present but payload fields are out of expected range or CRC fails, suspect module internal fault (camera/image processor) or corrupted firmware.
- If no messages are present, trace CAN bus continuity back to gateway and check termination resistors and splice connections. Repair open/shorts as needed.
- If wiring and power are good, attempt a factory-recommended module reset, reflash, or software update. Follow OEM calibration/initialization procedure for the DMS after replacement or software work.
- After repairs or updates, clear codes and perform a functional test and road test to confirm the DMS messages are valid and the U05B4 code does not return.
- If the problem persists and all vehicle-side wiring and power are confirmed good, consider replacing the DMS module and perform required programming and calibrations.
Likely causes
- Corroded or loose connector at the DMS camera/module
- Open/shorted CAN high or CAN low between DMS and main bus
- DMS firmware mismatch after recent module replacement or update
- Failed DMS camera/image processor producing invalid payload
- Network termination or bus speed/configuration mismatch
Fault status
Status
Invalid data received from Driver Monitoring System Module (DMS). Messages identified as corrupt, out-of-range, or failing validation checks; DMS output ignored by consuming modules.
