Causes

  • Open or short in wiring between EPB actuator/sensor and EPB control module
  • Corroded or loose connector at EPB actuator, switch or control module
  • Blown fuse or poor power/ground to the EPB module or associated sensors
  • Failed EPB actuator, switch or sensor
  • EPB control module software fault or internal failure
  • CAN/LIN network communication error or other module interfering on the bus

Symptoms

  • Automatic parking brake (auto-trigger/auto-hold) fails to engage or release automatically
  • Parking brake warning lamp or EPB fault message on the dash
  • Related traction/brake warnings or degraded vehicle functions
  • Intermittent operation of EPB auto feature or only manual operation available
  • Possible stored or additional communication fault codes

What to check

  • Read ECU memory and record freeze frame / related codes; note any CAN bus errors
  • Check battery voltage (with key on and engine off) and confirm adequate supply (≈12V)
  • Inspect fuses and relays for the EPB and body electronics
  • Visually inspect EPB actuator, auto-trigger switch and all connectors for corrosion, damage or loose pins
  • Check continuity and shorts between the switch/actuator and EPB module harness
  • Monitor live data/messages for the EPB auto-trigger input and for related CAN messages using a scan tool

Signal parameters

  • Auto-trigger is typically a digital on/off input: expected logical states = low (≈0 V) and high (≈ battery voltage) when actuated
  • Response time: status change should be reported within a few hundred milliseconds of operation
  • CAN/LIN status messages: EPB and related modules normally transmit status packets at periodic intervals (tool-dependent, commonly 1–10 Hz for status)
  • Supply voltage to EPB module: nominal battery voltage (~12 V); observe for drops under 10.5 V during diagnostics
  • Connector pin continuity: low resistance between sensor and module with no short to ground or battery

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Read and save all fault codes and freeze-frame data with a capable diagnostic tool; note related communication codes.
  2. Confirm battery state of charge and system voltage; charge or connect a stable power supply if low.
  3. Check fuses and power/ground at the EPB control module and at the auto-trigger switch/actuator.
  4. Visually inspect connectors and wiring for damage, corrosion or water ingress; repair any visible faults.
  5. Using a multimeter, verify presence of expected supply and ground at the switch/actuator connector; check switch output for correct voltage change when actuated (by hand or commanded helper operation).
  6. Use a scan tool to monitor the EPB auto-trigger input and related CAN messages while actuating the switch; if the module receives no change, trace harness/backprobe to find open/short.
  7. Perform continuity and short-to-power/ground tests on suspect wiring; repair or replace damaged harness sections or connectors.
  8. If wiring and sensor test good, command the EPB auto function and perform functional tests of the EPB module per manufacturer procedure; consider reflashing software if TSB or update available.
  9. If module fails to respond correctly despite good inputs, consider replacing the EPB control module (only after verifying inputs and communications).
  10. Clear codes and retest to confirm repair; road test to verify normal automatic parking brake operation.

Likely causes

  • Damaged wiring or a disconnected connector at the EPB auto-trigger switch
  • Faulty EPB auto-trigger switch or actuator
  • Intermittent ground or supply problem to the EPB module
  • Module-side fault or lost CAN messages from the module that provides the trigger

Fault status

⚠️ Status
No signal received by the EPB control module for the electrically controlled parking brake automatic trigger input. The module saved U1119 when the expected switch/sensor state or network status was absent.
🟡 Repair difficulty: Medium
⏱️ Diagnostic time: 1.0-2.5 hours
