Causes

  • Damaged or disconnected passenger seatbelt tension sensor
  • Corroded/loose connector or pin in seat harness under passenger seat
  • Open, short or chafed wiring between sensor and restraint control module (RCM)
  • Faulty passenger seatbelt sensor (load cell, switch or pretensioner sensor)
  • Faulty restraint control module or internal electronics
  • Water/moisture ingress or prior crash damage affecting harness or sensor

Symptoms

  • SRS / airbag warning lamp illuminated
  • Passenger seatbelt warning lamp may stay on or behave incorrectly
  • Passenger airbag enable/disable status may be incorrect or unavailable
  • Possible diagnostic trouble codes stored in restraint control module
  • Seat occupancy or belt buckle status incorrect on vehicle display (if equipped)

What to check

  • Connect a capable scan tool and read all stored codes and freeze frame data from the Restraints (RCM) module
  • Check vehicle service information/TSBs for known issues or calibration updates
  • Visually inspect passenger seat harness, buckle and connectors for damage, corrosion or water ingress
  • Back-probe sensor connector and check for proper reference voltage (see vehicle data) and ground
  • Measure continuity/resistance of sensor wiring to the RCM with connectors disconnected (power off)
  • Wiggle/operate seat and buckle while monitoring live data to reproduce intermittent faults

Signal parameters

  • Reference/feeding voltage: typically 5V or battery + when ignition on (verify in vehicle data)
  • Signal output: may be a switched circuit (continuity open/closed) or an analog 0–5 V / resistance value when tension applied — compare to manufacturer live-data values
  • Expected continuity when buckle latched for switch-type sensors, or specific resistance/voltage thresholds listed in service data
  • CAN/LIN message: some vehicles report buckle/tension status via network — check RCM live-data for passenger belt status

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve B0061 and any related codes with a diagnostic scanner; record freeze frame and stored data.
  2. Review manufacturer service information and wiring diagrams for passenger seatbelt tension sensor circuit and pinouts.
  3. Visually inspect passenger seat area and connectors for damage, moisture or corrosion; repair as needed.
  4. With ignition on, back-probe the sensor connector and verify reference voltage and ground at the connector (compare to spec).
  5. Monitor live-data from restraint module while buckling/unbuckling and applying tension; note expected changes. If no change, proceed.
  6. With ignition off, disconnect connector and check continuity/resistance between sensor pins and RCM connector pins; repair open/shorts.
  7. Wiggle seat harness and operate seat track while watching live-data to find intermittent wiring faults.
  8. If wiring and connectors test good and signals remain out of spec, replace the passenger seatbelt tension sensor (or buckle assembly) per service manual. Reconnect and clear codes.
  9. If replacing sensor does not correct fault, consider restraint control module diagnosis or replacement per manufacturer procedures (observe airbag safety protocols).
  10. After repairs, clear codes and verify with road test and scan tool that code does not return and that SRS lamp behaves normally.

Likely causes

  • Connector corrosion or poor connection under passenger seat (common)
  • Broken/chafed wiring in seat harness due to seat track movement
  • Failed sensor element (wear or internal short)

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Passenger seatbelt tension sensor circuit fault detected — signal missing, out of range, or intermittent (passenger restraint sensing).
