Causes

  • PCM commanded fuel disable to protect engine (safety strategy)
  • Failed or commanded-off fuel injector or injector circuit open/short
  • Low or no fuel rail pressure (fuel pump, relay, fuse, clogged filter)
  • Ignition failure (bad coil, spark plug, wiring)
  • Crankshaft or camshaft sensor fault or timing/synchronization loss
  • Severe engine mechanical problem (low compression, valve issue)

Symptoms

  • Check Engine MIL illuminated
  • Rough idle or pronounced misfire
  • Loss of power, sluggish acceleration or engine stalling
  • No-start or crank/no-run if fueling fully disabled
  • Fuel pump not audible when key on (possible fuel disable)
  • Possible backfiring or unusual exhaust smell

What to check

  • Read DTCs and freeze-frame data; note misfire counts and related codes (P03xx range)
  • Check fuel pump fuse, relay and listen for pump prime with key ON
  • Measure fuel rail pressure at key ON and while cranking/running
  • Scan live data: misfire counters, injector pulse widths, long/short-term fuel trims, fuel rail pressure, crank/cam signals
  • Inspect wiring and connectors for injectors, coils, crank/cam sensors and PCM grounds
  • Verify injector resistance and operation with a noid light or oscilloscope

Signal parameters

  • Cylinder misfire counts (per-cylinder) — expect zero or very low at steady state
  • Fuel rail pressure (psi/bar) — should match manufacturer spec at idle and key ON prime
  • Injector pulse width (ms) — should be present and vary with RPM/load
  • Short-term and long-term fuel trims (%) — large corrections may indicate fueling issue
  • Crankshaft sensor signal (frequency/voltage) and camshaft correlation — stable square wave/sinusoidal as specified
  • Battery voltage (V) — stable 12–14 V during cranking/running

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve all codes and freeze-frame; prioritize misfire counts and any fuel system codes.
  2. Verify whether PCM is actively commanding fuel disable (check status flags/logs).
  3. Confirm fuel pump operation: check fuse/relay, listen for pump prime, measure fuel rail pressure.
  4. If fuel pressure is low/absent, diagnose fuel supply (pump, relay, filter, pressure regulator, lines).
  5. Test injector circuits: measure resistance, check continuity to PCM, verify injector pulse with noid light or scope.
  6. Verify ignition on suspected cylinders: inspect plugs, test coils, check secondary spark under load if safe.
  7. Check crank and cam sensor signals and timing/chain/belt condition; correct timing faults before further testing.
  8. Perform compression or leak-down test if mechanical failure is suspected from other tests.
  9. Repair or replace faulty components; clear codes and perform controlled road test while monitoring misfire counters and fuel status.
  10. If fueling was disabled by PCM without obvious cause, review PCM software, recent repairs, and manufacturer service info before replacing modules.

Likely causes

  • Fuel pump not running or low rail pressure causing PCM to disable fueling
  • Injector wiring harness open, shorted, or failed injector preventing fuel delivery
  • PCM detected severe misfire and entered fuel-cut strategy to protect catalytic converter
  • Ignition coil or spark plug failure causing persistent misfire and fuel disable
  • Crank/cam sensor fault or timing loss leading PCM to disable injection
