Causes

  • Failed/dirty/intermittent connector at the seat position restriction sensor
  • Broken or shorted wiring in the sensor/supply/signal circuit (chafing in the seat harness)
  • Faulty position restriction sensor (potentiometer or switch)
  • Mechanical obstruction or seized seat track preventing full travel
  • Corrosion or water ingress in the seat rail area or sensor connector
  • Faulty seat control module or related body control module software/firmware

Symptoms

  • Driver's power seat will not move or movement is limited/intermittent
  • Seat stops or reverses direction unexpectedly
  • Driver seat memory or safety interlocks not working
  • A stored B00B5 fault and possibly related body module warnings displayed on diagnostic scan tool
  • Noise from seat motor without expected travel

What to check

  • Scan vehicle and record all stored/related DTCs and freeze frame data; clear codes and retry to reproduce
  • Visually inspect the driver's seat track for debris, foreign objects, broken fixings or binding
  • Inspect seat wiring harness along the track for chafing, pinches, broken wires or damaged insulation
  • Unplug and inspect the position restriction sensor connector for corrosion, bent pins or moisture
  • Check fuses and relays feeding the seat module/motor
  • Use a scan tool to view live data for the seat position sensor while commanding seat movement

Signal parameters

  • Reference supply/logic power to the sensor (typically 5 V or vehicle reference voltage) — must be present and stable
  • Ground continuity at the sensor (low resistance to vehicle ground)
  • Signal voltage from the position sensor should change smoothly as the seat is moved (example expected range 0.2–4.8 V depending on position)
  • Resistance or potentiometer sweep should be continuous without dead spots when manually moving the seat track (if applicable)
  • Motor current draw should increase if mechanically jammed — compare to specification or the opposite seat if available

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Read and record DTCs and live data. Note when the fault occurs (every time or intermittent).
  2. Attempt seat operation while monitoring the position sensor live value. Confirm whether the sensor value changes and if the control module stops travel when the restriction is indicated.
  3. Visually inspect for mechanical obstructions and clear any debris. Manually move seat (with power off and battery disconnected if extensive inspection required) to check for binding.
  4. Visually inspect the wiring harness and connector at the sensor and along the seat rail. Repair any damaged wires or corroded terminals.
  5. With connector connected, backprobe and verify reference voltage, signal voltage and ground. Verify signal varies smoothly through full travel. If no reference or poor ground, trace and repair circuit.
  6. If wiring and power/ground are good but signal is erratic or out of range, replace the position restriction sensor.
  7. If sensor replacement does not clear the issue, check the seat control module communication and functionality. Reprogram/calibrate seat module as required per manufacturer procedure.
  8. After repairs, clear codes and perform multiple full travel cycles to confirm repair and that no new faults return.

Likely causes

  • Connector/wiring damage in the seat harness (most common with repeated seat movement)
  • Mechanical obstruction or binding in the seat track
  • Failed position restriction sensor

Fault status

⚠️ Status
B00B5 — Position Restriction Sensor (driver's track) fault detected. Check seat track, harness and sensor. Service recommended to restore correct seat movement and safety functions.
