Causes

  • Blown fuse or faulty relay supplying the audible indicator
  • Open or short in wiring between RCM and audible indicator (chime/buzzer/speaker)
  • Poor or corroded connector or pin at the audible indicator or RCM
  • Failed audible indicator (speaker, piezo buzzer or assembly)
  • Faulty RCM or internal driver circuitry
  • Low battery or unstable supply voltage during self-test

Symptoms

  • No restrain-system chime or audible warnings when expected (key on, ignition off buckle reminder, pre-collision alerts)
  • Continuous or intermittent chime that cannot be silenced
  • Airbag(s) or supplemental restraint system (SRS) warning light illuminated
  • Related restraint system warnings/messages displayed on dash
  • DTC B00D4 stored in RCM memory

What to check

  • Use a factory-level scan tool to read/record all RCM DTCs and freeze-frame data; attempt to command the chime/indicator via bi-directional controls
  • Verify battery voltage (12.0–14.5 V) and battery condition before testing
  • Inspect fuses and any relays that feed the audible indicator circuit
  • Visually inspect wiring and connectors for damage, pin corrosion, bent pins, or water intrusion at the audible unit and RCM
  • Check RCM and instrument cluster ground connections for corrosion or looseness
  • Check for network/communication DTCs (U-codes) that could affect audible command signals

Signal parameters

  • Supply voltage to audible device: nominal vehicle battery 11–14.5 V (key ON)
  • Control signal: typically either switched +12 V or switched/grounded drive or PWM from RCM — 0–12 V logic range when active
  • Audible device impedance: varies by type — dynamic speaker coils often 4–32 Ω; piezo buzzers are high-impedance devices (kΩ)
  • Typical drive frequency for tonal chimes: hundreds to a few thousand Hz (depends on vehicle), duty cycle varies with tone
  • Current draw: generally low (

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Record the code and all related DTCs with a scan tool; note ignition state and freeze-frame data
  2. Clear the DTC and operate the vehicle through conditions that should produce the chime to see if the code returns
  3. Check battery state-of-charge and connections; recharge or replace battery if low before further testing
  4. Inspect fuses/relays for the chime/audible circuit; replace any blown fuses and retest
  5. Visually inspect and gently wiggle wiring and connectors at the audible device and RCM while monitoring for change in behavior
  6. With connector disconnected, measure supply voltage at the audible device connector with key ON; compare to battery voltage
  7. Use a scope or DVOM to observe the control pin while commanding the chime from a scan tool; verify the presence of a switching or PWM control signal when commanded
  8. Measure continuity between the RCM output pin and the audible device input pin; repair any opens or high-resistance sections
  9. Bench-test the audible device (if removable) by applying a known safe test signal (use manufacturer guidance); replace the device if it fails to produce correct sound
  10. If wiring, fuse and device test good, consider RCM driver failure; check for software updates or reprogramming history and consult service information before replacing the RCM
  11. After repair, clear codes, re-test all audible functions and road-test to ensure the DTC does not return; verify no other SRS faults remain

Likely causes

  • Blown fuse or missing power to chime circuit
  • Damaged or disconnected wiring harness to the audible device
  • Failed chime/buzzer unit (common wear or water ingress)
  • Corroded connector at RCM or dash-mounted speaker
  • RCM internal driver failure or RCM software fault
