Causes

  • Broken or disconnected wiring between BCM/door module and driver door lock actuator
  • Corroded or loose connector at the actuator or door harness
  • Blown fuse protecting the door lock circuit
  • Failed door lock actuator (motor/coil open)
  • Faulty door module or BCM output driver
  • Intermittent wiring damage inside the door hinge area (pinch point)

Symptoms

  • Driver door lock does not lock or unlock with key fob, door switch, or central lock command
  • No audible actuator noise from driver door when commanding lock/unlock
  • Other doors operate normally while driver door fails
  • DTC stored and possibly lamp/message on instrument cluster
  • Intermittent operation or only works when manipulating wiring/connector

What to check

  • Inspect driver door wiring, harness through hinge area, and connectors for damage, corrosion, or loose pins
  • Verify fuses and fusible links for the door lock circuit
  • Operate lock/unlock while listening at the driver door for actuator noise
  • With ignition ON, measure voltage at the actuator connector while commanding lock/unlock (watch for 12V or switched ground depending on design)
  • Check continuity between actuator connector and BCM/door module connector for open or high resistance
  • Measure actuator coil resistance (with circuit power off) to see if coil is open

Signal parameters

  • Expected supply voltage at actuator when commanded: approximately battery voltage (~9–14 V) on the feed or switched output
  • Actuator coil resistance (typical range depends on design): often roughly 10–50 ohms; an open reading (OL) indicates actuator failure
  • No continuity between connector pin and BCM pin indicates open circuit
  • Some systems use a switched ground or polarity reversal; check service manual for correct expected polarity and waveform
  • When commanded, actuator current draw should be measurable; zero current suggests open circuit

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Safety: Park vehicle, set parking brake, and turn ignition to ON (do not start). Use appropriate PPE. If performing resistance checks, remove battery negative if required by the service manual.
  2. Retrieve freeze-frame data and note any additional body/door codes from scan tool.
  3. Visually inspect driver door latch/actuator connector and wiring through hinge area for cuts, chafing, or corrosion. Repair obvious damage.
  4. Check relevant fuses and relays for the door lock circuit; replace if blown and retest.
  5. With connector unplugged and circuit power OFF, measure actuator coil resistance. If open (infinite) or out of expected range, replace actuator.
  6. With connector connected and ignition ON, command lock/unlock while measuring voltage at the actuator power pin(s). If no voltage, trace back toward the BCM/door module.
  7. Perform continuity test between actuator connector and BCM/door module connector pins with harness flexed through hinge area to detect intermittent opens. Repair or replace harness if open.
  8. If wiring and actuator are good, use scope or appropriate test procedures to check BCM/door module output driver for correct switching. If BCM output is absent but wiring is good, consider module fault and follow manufacturer procedures for repair or replacement.
  9. After repairs, clear DTCs and cycle lock/unlock several times to confirm symptom cleared and code does not return.
  10. If code returns after component replacement, recheck wiring and verify proper grounding and power supply; consider professional module-level diagnostics.

  • Open or high-resistance wire in driver door harness (most common)
  • Corrosion or bent pins in the door harness connector
  • Failed actuator motor or internal open coil
  • Blown fuse or tripped fusible link
  • Faulty BCM/door module output (less common)
