B — Body
Rear inside TEMP. sensor low
AI status
Completed
Completed
100%
Causes
- Faulty rear inside temperature sensor (NTC thermistor failure)
- Open circuit or short in sensor wiring (short to ground or to power)
- Corroded, loose or water-damaged connector at the sensor
- Poor ground or reference voltage from HVAC/control module
- HVAC control module fault or software issue
Symptoms
- Rear automatic climate may not regulate temperature correctly
- Rear temperature display shows an abnormally low value or error
- Blower or damper behaviour is abnormal for selected setpoint
- DTC B1006 present in HVAC/climate control module memory
- Possible intermittent HVAC faults after moisture exposure or trunk/rear work
What to check
- Read and record freeze frame and any related HVAC codes with a scan tool
- View live data: rear inside temperature sensor reading compared to other cabin/ambient temps
- Visually inspect sensor location, connector and harness for damage or corrosion
- Backprobe connector and measure sensor voltage (if voltage type) or remove sensor and measure resistance with multimeter
- Check reference supply (usually 5 V) and ground at the connector with ignition ON
- Wiggle test wiring and connector while watching live data for intermittent changes
Signal parameters
- Sensor type: typically NTC thermistor (resistance varies with temperature)
- Expected behaviour: resistance increases as temperature drops; resistance decreases as temperature rises
- Open-circuit: very high resistance or OL; Short-to-ground: near 0 Ω (or sensor voltage near ground)
- Control module typically supplies a reference (e.g., 5 V) and reads sensor voltage; a voltage below the module threshold triggers a 'low' fault
- Verify a clear, repeatable resistance change when sensor is placed in cold (ice water) and warm (hand/warm water) conditions
Diagnostic algorithm
- Connect a manufacturer-capable scan tool. Read and record DTCs and live data for the rear inside temp sensor and related sensors.
- Compare the sensor reading to actual cabin temperature with a thermometer. Note any large discrepancy or constant low reading.
- Visually inspect sensor mounting, harness routing and connector for water, corrosion, damage or pin push-out. Repair any visible damage.
- With ignition ON, backprobe the sensor connector: check reference voltage and ground continuity. If reference or ground is missing, trace to fuse/module and repair.
- Remove the sensor and measure resistance with a multimeter at ambient, then in cold (ice water) and warm conditions. Confirm resistance changes with temperature. If resistance does not change or is open/short, replace the sensor.
- If sensor resistance looks correct but module still reports low, check continuity of signal wire to the HVAC module and inspect for shorts to ground/power. Repair wiring as needed.
- If wiring and sensor test good, suspect HVAC control module input fault. Confirm with wiring pins disconnected and module bench test if available, and consult manufacturer service information before replacing module.
- After repair, clear codes, run the system and verify the sensor reading returns to normal and no DTCs reappear.
Likely causes
- Sensor element failed (no resistance change with temperature)
- Wire chafing that created a short to ground
- Connector pins corroded or bent — intermittent contact
- Disconnected or damaged harness after rear trim removal
- Control module input circuit damaged (less common)
Fault status
Status
Rear inside temperature sensor signal is below the allowed threshold (low). Possible causes include sensor failure, open circuit or short in wiring, connector corrosion, or control module input fault. DTC stored in the HVAC/climate control module.
Repair difficulty: Medium
Diagnostic time: 0.5-1.5 hours
