LAND ROVER B — Body

column lock Authorization of

Type: B — Body

Page language: EN

Causes

  • Faulty steering column lock actuator or internal sensor
  • Immobilizer/key transponder not recognized or programming fault
  • Loss of communications between steering lock module and immobilizer/BCM (CAN/LIN fault)
  • Power supply or ground fault to the lock module/actuator
  • Damaged wiring or connector to the column lock
  • Module software/configuration mismatch or corrupted calibration

Symptoms

  • Steering column remains locked or intermittently locks
  • Vehicle will not crank or start (immobilizer prevents starter)
  • Security/immobilizer warning lamp or message on dash
  • Remote locking/unlocking or keyless entry malfunction
  • DTCs present in immobilizer, BCM, or steering lock module

What to check

  • Read and record all DTCs from Body/Steering lock/Immobilizer modules using a dealer-level scanner
  • Verify key(s) are recognized: try known-good/spare key
  • Check battery voltage and fuses related to steering lock and immobilizer
  • Inspect connectors and wiring at the steering column lock module for damage or corrosion
  • Check CAN/LIN network status and look for lost-communication DTCs
  • Attempt to command/unlock the column with diagnostic tool (if supported) and observe behavior

Signal parameters

  • Power supply to column lock (battery voltage present at supply pin)
  • Ground continuity to lock module
  • Actuator command/feedback signals (CAN frames or LIN messages depending on vehicle)
  • Lock actuator response (mechanical movement when commanded)
  • Immobilizer transponder read status (key ID recognized / not recognized)
  • Module internal error/health flags and session status

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Use a capable diagnostic tool to read all related modules (steering lock, BCM, Immobilizer/RFA). Record DTCs and freeze frame or module status.
  2. Verify the symptom: attempt to start/turn steering and note whether lock is engaged. Try spare programmed key to rule out key failure.
  3. Check vehicle battery voltage and relevant fuses/relays. Low voltage can prevent authorization procedures.
  4. Visually inspect connectors and wiring at the steering lock unit and immobilizer antenna coil; repair any damage or corrosion.
  5. Check communication bus: verify CAN/LIN physical layer voltages and presence of messages for the steering lock and immobilizer modules. Address any network errors or shorts.
  6. If connectors and communications are good, command the lock to operate via diagnostic tool and monitor responses. If actuator does not respond but has supply voltage, suspect a failed actuator or internal module fault.
  7. Measure actuator coil resistance or perform a bench test per manufacturer procedure (use appropriate safety and service documentation). Replace actuator if out of specification.
  8. If actuator and wiring are good but authorization still fails, inspect immobilizer/key recognition function. Re-scan keys, check antenna coil/read status, and try reprogramming or resynchronizing keys per service instructions.
  9. If module replacement is required, follow manufacturer procedures for coding/initialization/programming of the steering lock and immobilizer to avoid persistent authorization faults.
  10. Clear codes and retest operation and communication. If intermittent, perform road/ignition cycles to confirm repair.

Likely causes

  • Failed or stuck column lock actuator
  • Key transponder not being read / battery in key low or damaged key
  • CAN bus communication error between steering lock and immobilizer/BCM
  • Blown fuse or poor ground to steering lock module
  • Module needs reprogramming after replacement or software update
