Causes

  • Open (broken) wire in passenger airbag/squib circuit
  • Poor or disconnected connector at passenger airbag or airbag control module (ACM)
  • Corroded or bent pins in connector under/behind passenger seat
  • Damaged airbag module (passenger module) or its internal squib
  • Previous repairs or aftermarket equipment that cut or displaced the harness
  • Faulty airbag control module (less common)

Symptoms

  • SRS / AIRBAG warning lamp illuminated or lit steady
  • Passenger airbag disabled; possible passenger airbag OFF message
  • Related passenger occupancy/seatbelt alerts may behave incorrectly
  • DTC B1017 stored in airbag/ACM memory

What to check

  • Read and record DTCs and freeze frame with an SRS-capable scan tool
  • Visual inspection of passenger seat area, connectors, and wiring harness for damage or corrosion
  • Check that passenger airbag connector is fully seated and locking tab engaged
  • Measure continuity/resistance of passenger squib circuit with battery disconnected
  • Inspect under-seat harness routing at seat track for chafing or breaks
  • Check connectors at the airbag control module for bent pins or moisture

Signal parameters

  • Squib circuit expected continuity: low resistance (typical passenger squib ≈ 0.5–5 Ω depending on vehicle); an open is infinite Ω / OL
  • ACM detects open when measured resistance exceeds expected range or is open-circuit
  • No steady data 'voltage' should be applied to squib during diagnosis; use resistance/continuity tests with battery disconnected
  • Stored code and freeze-frame data available from SRS control module via scan tool

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Safety first: Disable the battery and follow manufacturer wait time for SRS capacitors to discharge before touching SRS components (consult service manual).
  2. Use an SRS-capable scan tool: read and record DTCs, clear codes, then re-scan to confirm B1017 returns.
  3. Perform a careful visual inspection of passenger airbag connector and harness under the seat and at the seat base; look for loose connectors, corrosion, broken strands, tape repairs, or pinch points.
  4. Unplug the passenger airbag connector (with battery disabled) and inspect pins for damage/corrosion; gently clean if needed and reseat.
  5. Measure resistance/continuity between the passenger airbag squib connector and the corresponding pins at the airbag control module. Expected: low ohms. If open, locate break by probing along harness sections.
  6. Wiggle test: with harness connected and battery re-enabled per safety instructions, have an assistant monitor live DTCs while gently moving the seat through travel to see if the fault appears/disappears (only if permitted by vehicle procedures).
  7. If open is located at a connector or broken wire, repair using proper SRS harness repair methods (replace connector or section, use correct crimp terminals, solder only if allowed by manufacturer, protect with heat-shrink tubing).
  8. If the passenger airbag module measures open at its squib pins and wiring is good to the module, replace the passenger airbag module per service manual.
  9. If wiring and module check good but code persists, inspect and test the airbag control module connectors and replace ACM only after confirming harness and modules are good.
  10. After repair, clear codes with scan tool, verify no return of B1017, and perform any required SRS system verifications (occupancy sensor calibrations, seat module learn procedures) per manufacturer instructions.

Likely causes

  • Connector under passenger seat pulled apart or not fully seated after service
  • Wire broken at seat track where it flexes during seat travel
  • Corrosion from water intrusion under seat
  • Poor crimp/joint where harness was repaired
  • Faulty passenger airbag module (internal open squib)
