Causes

  • Failed or degraded air quality (AQS) sensor
  • Open/short or intermittent wiring between sensor and HVAC/BCM
  • Poor connector contact, corrosion, or water ingress
  • Blown fuse or lost power/ground to sensor
  • Faulty HVAC control module or BCM software/firmware error
  • Physically contaminated sensor (dust, moisture, oil, cigarette smoke)

Symptoms

  • HVAC 'Auto' or air recirculation functions do not operate correctly
  • Cabin air quality/recirculation indicator lamp or message
  • Reduced HVAC air quality control performance (incorrect fresh/recirc switching)
  • DTC stored in vehicle body/HVAC diagnostic memory; may not illuminate MIL
  • Unusual cabin odors not detected or persistent recirculation when not desired

What to check

  • Read stored and pending codes and any freeze-frame data with a capable diagnostic tool
  • Visual inspection of AQS sensor location (usually near fresh air intake or passenger side dash) for contamination or damage
  • Inspect wiring harness and connector for damage, corrosion, water ingress, or loose pins
  • Check relevant fuses and power/ground at the HVAC/BCM circuits
  • Monitor sensor output signal with a scope or multimeter while operating HVAC auto/recirc
  • Verify software/calibration updates or TSBs for the HVAC/BCM

Signal parameters

  • Sensor type varies by model: may be analog voltage (typical 0.5–4.5 V range) or digital (I2C/LIN/CAN depending on model year)
  • At key-on the sensor should receive 5 V or vehicle-specific supply and a stable ground
  • Sensor output should change with introduction of test contaminant (paper smoke, VOC spray) when observed with scope
  • Look for stable voltage with no excessive noise or intermittent drops; communication-based sensors should show valid frames on LIN/I2C/CAN

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a diagnostic scanner, read B102E and any related codes; record freeze-frame data and sensor live-data if available.
  2. Locate the air quality sensor (consult model-specific manual). Visually inspect for contamination, water damage, or loose mounting.
  3. Inspect the sensor connector and wiring for corrosion, bent pins, breaks or chafing. Wiggle test harness while monitoring live data to detect intermittent faults.
  4. Verify power and ground at the sensor connector with a multimeter (key on). Repair any open circuits or poor grounds.
  5. If sensor is analog: measure sensor output voltage with key on and while inducing a temporary air quality change (brief exposure to safe test vapor/steam). For digital sensors: monitor communication lines for valid messages or errors.
  6. If wiring and power/ground are good but output is out of expected range or unresponsive, replace the sensor with OEM or approved equivalent.
  7. After repair/replace, clear codes, perform HVAC self-test (if available), and confirm code does not return under normal operation.
  8. If fault persists after sensor replacement, verify HVAC/BCM software levels and perform module-level diagnostics or replace/control unit as directed by manufacturer procedures.

Likely causes

  • AQS sensor element has failed (most common)
  • Damaged sensor wiring harness or chafed insulation causing intermittent connection
  • Corroded or loose connector terminals at the sensor
  • HVAC control module not powering or not reading the sensor
  • Sensor contaminated by debris or moisture leading to incorrect readings

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Air Quality Sensor fault detected. The HVAC/BCM reports invalid or out-of-range sensor data, or loss of communication with the air quality sensor. Automatic recirculation/air quality control may be disabled.
