Fog light switch with burnt fuse

Type: B — Body

Page language: EN

Causes

  • Blown or burnt fuse for the fog lamp circuit
  • Short to ground or internal short in fog lamp wiring
  • Faulty fog light switch (internal contact failure or short)
  • Damaged connector or corroded terminals at switch, fuse box, or lamps
  • Faulty fog lamp bulb or lamp harness drawing excessive current
  • Faulty relay or control module feeding the fog lights

Symptoms

  • Front (or rear) fog lights do not operate
  • Fuse for the fog light circuit is visibly blown or burnt
  • Fuse repeatedly blows when replaced
  • Switch feels sticky, loose, or does not click normally
  • Occasional loss of other lighting functions if shared circuit

What to check

  • Visual inspection of fog light fuse (condition, correct amp rating)
  • Inspect fog light bulbs for damage, correct installation, and shorted filaments
  • Check switch operation and wiring at the switch connector for damage/corrosion
  • Inspect harness and connectors between fuse box, switch, relay, and lamps for chafing or exposed conductors
  • Measure supply voltage at fuse and fog lamp connector with switch on
  • Measure current draw of the fog light circuit with an ammeter/clamp meter

Signal parameters

  • Battery supply voltage at fuse: ~12.0–14.5 V with engine off/on respectively
  • Continuity between fuse output and fog lamp connector: near 0 ohms (minus lamp resistance when disconnected)
  • Switch contact resistance: low (near 0 ohms) in ON position, open in OFF
  • Circuit current draw: within lamp specification (typically 1–5 A per lamp depending on type)
  • No high current spikes or short-to-ground present when circuit is activated

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Record conditions and freeze-frame data if available. Note whether fuse is consistently blown or intermittent.
  2. Visually inspect the fuse for burning, melting, or incorrect rating. Replace with correct-rated fuse (do not use higher rating).
  3. With new correct fuse installed, operate the fog light switch while observing the fuse: if it blows immediately, proceed to isolate circuit.
  4. Remove/disconnect fog lamp bulbs or disconnect lamp connectors then retry with fuse: if fuse no longer blows, suspect lamp or lamp harness short; inspect bulbs and lamp assembly.
  5. If fuse still blows with lamps disconnected, disconnect the fog light switch and operate circuit at the fuse/relay side; if fuse now holds, suspect switch internal short—test or replace switch.
  6. Inspect wiring harness between fuse box, switch and lamps for chafing, pinched sections or corrosion; repair damaged insulation, repair or replace harness sections as needed.
  7. Measure continuity and resistance from fuse output to lamp connectors and to ground. Look for near-zero resistance to ground (short) or unexpected resistance (open/high resistance).
  8. Check fog lamp relay (if present) by swapping with known-good identical relay or bench-testing; inspect relay socket for damage.
  9. If body control module (BCM) or lighting module controls the circuit, verify module outputs with a diagnostic tool and consult wiring diagrams; reprogram/replace module only after wiring and components verified good.
  10. After repairs, clear codes, replace any damaged components, reinstall correct fuse, and verify operation. Monitor for reoccurrence and road test as needed.

Likely causes

  • Blown fuse caused by shorted wiring or lamp
  • Damaged/shorted fog light switch
  • Corroded/damaged connector at switch or lamp
  • Faulty fog lamp bulb or lamp assembly causing overcurrent

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Fog light switch circuit fault detected — blown/failed fuse. Fog lights may not operate. Inspect fuse, switch, wiring, and bulbs.
