Causes

  • Failed or worn 2‑button switch assembly
  • Damaged, corroded or loose connector at the switch
  • Broken, shorted or pinched wiring harness to the switch
  • Poor ground or blown fuse for the circuit
  • Faulty body control module (BCM) or steering/controls module
  • CAN or network communication errors or software faults

Symptoms

  • One or both button functions do not operate
  • Related feature(s) (audio, phone, cruise, hands‑free) do not respond to the buttons
  • Intermittent or inconsistent button operation
  • DTC B104B stored or active in diagnostic scan tool
  • Possible related warning or message on the dash depending on feature

What to check

  • Retrieve freeze frame and full fault list with a scan tool; note active vs. historic status
  • Visually inspect the switch and surrounding trim for damage and contamination
  • Inspect and reseat switch connector; check pins for corrosion, bent pins or pushed‑out terminals
  • Check related fuses and power/ground points for the switch circuit
  • Use a multimeter to verify reference voltage/power and ground at the connector with connector plugged and unplugged
  • Check continuity/insulation resistance of wiring between switch and module; flex (wiggle) harness while observing data/continuity for intermittent faults

Signal parameters

  • Reference supply voltage at switch: typically vehicle 5V logic or switched 12V (verify with wiring diagram)
  • Expected voltage at inactive/open switch: near reference; closed switch will pull input to ground or to a distinct logic level (model dependent)
  • DC continuity: closed switch ≈0–5 Ω (very low); open = high resistance/OL
  • CAN data: messages for switch state should be present on the bus when operated — missing messages indicate network/module issue
  • Resistance to chassis ground at switch ground: close to 0 Ω

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a full‑function scanner; record DTC details (status, freeze frame, occurrence count). Clear codes and attempt to reproduce the fault.
  2. Visually inspect switch and trim for contamination, damage, or water ingress. Remove trim if needed and inspect connector pins for corrosion or damage.
  3. Verify power and ground at the switch connector with ignition on. Compare voltages to the repair manual/wiring diagram for the vehicle.
  4. Operate the button while watching live data on the scan tool or monitoring voltage at the switch terminal to confirm whether the switch changes state reliably.
  5. If no correct voltage/logic change, test continuity from switch pins back to the control module; repair any opens/shorts or damaged wiring.
  6. If wiring and connector are good but switch still fails or shows intermittent readings, replace the 2‑button switch assembly and retest.
  7. If switch replacement does not clear issue, inspect the receiving module (BCM/controls module) for internal faults, check CAN communication for errors, and consider module reflash or replacement per manufacturer guidance.
  8. After repairs, clear codes and road‑test to verify the DTC does not return. If intermittent, stress test by operating and flexing harness and environmental tests if possible.

Likely causes

  • Faulty 2‑button switch
  • Loose or corroded connector at the switch
  • Open or short in the switch wiring harness
  • Intermittent contact due to dirt/wear or water ingress

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Stored fault indicating a problem in the “2 Button” input/circuit. The fault may be active or intermittent; further electrical and module checks are required to determine the root cause.
🟡 Repair difficulty: Medium
⏱️ Diagnostic time: 0.5-2.0 hours
