Causes

  • Faulty piston compartment lid position sensor (switch or Hall-effect sensor)
  • Damaged, corroded or disconnected sensor connector or wiring harness
  • Mechanical binding, misalignment or obstruction of piston compartment lid or linkage
  • Poor ground or power supply to sensor
  • Intermittent connection due to water ingress or wiring chafe
  • Faulty body control module or module software/firmware fault

Symptoms

  • Convertible top may not operate or will stop mid-cycle
  • Warning or message on dash related to roof/soft-top or lid
  • BCM stores B1070 and possibly other roof or body codes
  • Unusual noises or binding when attempting to open/close the lid
  • Inconsistent lid position indication in diagnostic data

What to check

  • Read and record stored/PAST/FROZEN DTCs with a compatible diagnostic tool
  • Attempt roof operation while watching live data for lid sensor status
  • Visually inspect piston compartment lid, actuator, and surrounding linkage for damage or obstruction
  • Inspect sensor connector for corrosion, water ingress, bent pins or broken retainers
  • Perform wiggle test on wiring harness while watching live data for intermittent signal changes
  • Check fuse(s) and ground for circuitry powering the sensor

Signal parameters

  • Typical sensor types: mechanical switch (open/closed) or 3-wire Hall sensor (0–5 V signal).
  • Switch-type: continuity to ground or near 0 ohms with lid in the closed position; open (OL) when lid open.
  • Hall/voltage-type: reference 5 V supply, signal toggles between ~0.5 V (one state) and ~4.5 V (other state) depending on lid position.
  • Expected CAN/BCM message: lid position bit toggles between defined states when actuated (check vehicle-specific factory data).

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Verify DTC: Connect a diagnostic scanner, confirm B1070 and note freeze frame/live data.
  2. Reproduce: With vehicle safe and ignition on, operate the roof while monitoring the lid sensor status in live data to confirm if/when the signal changes.
  3. Visual/mechanical inspection: Check for obstructions, broken/stuck linkages, or misalignment preventing sensor actuation; manually operate lid to observe physical actuator.
  4. Connector/wiring: Disconnect sensor connector, inspect pins and seals, clean and reseal if corroded. Check for continuity between sensor connector and BCM connector pins per vehicle wiring diagram.
  5. Power/ground: With ignition on, verify reference voltage and ground at the sensor connector (use backprobe). Compare to expected values from signal_params.
  6. Signal test: Measure sensor output while moving the lid through its travel. For switch-type sensors check continuity; for voltage sensors check signal voltage transitions. Watch for intermittent changes during wiggle test.
  7. Repair or replace: If wiring or connector faults found, repair splices, replace damaged harness sections, and secure connectors. If sensor fails bench or vehicle tests, replace sensor and seal against moisture.
  8. Clear codes and retest: Erase codes, cycle the roof through several open/close operations and re-scan. If DTC returns, extend diagnosis to BCM and CAN bus integrity or consult manufacturer technical service information.

Likely causes

  • Corroded/disconnected sensor connector at piston compartment lid
  • Failed lid position sensor (water-damaged switch or internal failure)
  • Wiring damage between sensor and BCM (open/short to ground/voltage)
  • Mechanical interference preventing the lid from reaching the sensor actuator

Fault status

⚠️ Status
B1070 - Piston compartment lid position sensor OUT OF RANGE / NO SIGNAL. Check lid sensor, wiring, and BCM.
🟡 Repair difficulty: Medium
⏱️ Diagnostic time: 0.5-2.0 hours
