Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve the code and any related codes; record freeze-frame or data parameters. Note vehicle configuration (12V/48V/hybrid).
  2. Inspect visible wiring, connectors and heater assembly for physical damage, corrosion, water ingress or overheating.
  3. Verify fuses and relays in the heater supply and control circuits; replace if blown or faulty and retest.
  4. With vehicle key on and heater commanded (use scan tool actuator test if available), measure supply voltage at heater connector and confirm control signal at module output.
  5. Measure heater element resistance with power removed. An open circuit indicates a failed element; a short to ground indicates internal failure.
  6. Measure current draw during activation. Compare to expected range from service data; abnormally high or low current indicates element or wiring problem.
  7. Wiggle test wiring and connectors while monitoring voltage/current to identify intermittent faults.
  8. If wiring and heater check good, verify module operation and communications. Check for diagnostic outputs from the module and update software if advised by technical bulletins.
  9. If heater element is confirmed faulty, replace the PTC heater assembly following manufacturer procedure. Re-test and clear codes; perform final road/functional test.
  10. Safety note: If the system is high-voltage (hybrid/EV), do not attempt HV testing or component removal unless qualified and following HV isolation procedures.
