rear double engine lock

Causes

  • Failed rear double lock actuator or motor
  • Mechanical binding or foreign object preventing lock movement
  • Intermittent or failed connector at actuator
  • Damaged wiring harness (short to ground, open, or short to power)
  • Blown fuse or faulty relay feeding the lock circuit
  • Faulty body control module (BCM) or module software fault

Symptoms

  • Rear double engine lock will not lock or unlock on request
  • Intermittent operation or requires multiple attempts to operate
  • Associated warning lamp or message on the instrument cluster or infotainment
  • Noise (grinding or no sound) from rear lock area when command is given
  • Related central locking or immobiliser symptoms in some cases

What to check

  • Read and record freeze frame and any related DTCs with a manufacturer-level diagnostic scanner
  • Attempt lock/unlock while observing lock area for movement and listening for actuator noise
  • Visually inspect actuator, lock mechanism and nearby harness for damage, corrosion, contamination or foreign objects
  • Check fuses and relays for the lock circuit
  • Inspect and reseat connectors at the actuator and BCM
  • Check for technical service bulletins (TSBs) or software updates related to lock systems for the vehicle

Signal parameters

  • Actuator supply voltage (key/lock command): approx. 9–12 V when commanded (varies with vehicle architecture)
  • Ground continuity: near 0 Ω between actuator ground and chassis ground
  • Actuator coil/motor resistance: typically low ohms to tens of ohms (manufacturer-specific) — expect measurable resistance, not open circuit
  • Command/feedback switch: opens/closes on travel; should change state when operated
  • Current draw during operation: usually in the 0.1–3 A range depending on actuator size (watch for stalled-high current)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a manufacturer-level diagnostic tool and clear code, attempt operation and verify code reappears; capture any accompanying codes or live data
  2. Visual inspection: examine actuator, lock mechanism and wiring for damage, moisture, corrosion or obstruction; free any binding components
  3. Check power and ground at the actuator connector: with ignition and command active measure voltage on supply pin and continuity to ground
  4. If supply or ground missing, trace wiring back to fuse/relay and BCM; inspect and test fuse and relay
  5. Backprobe actuator connector while commanding lock: verify correct voltage/pulse and any feedback signal; compare to expected values from service data
  6. Measure actuator resistance and current: if open circuit or excessive current (stall), remove actuator and bench-test with appropriate low-voltage supply and fuse
  7. Inspect connector pins for corrosion or loose terminals; repair or replace connector as required
  8. If wiring and actuator test good, check BCM outputs and input signals using diagnostic tool; consult wiring diagrams and perform module output tests
  9. If BCM outputs are absent or erratic but wiring and actuator are good, consider BCM software update or replacement following manufacturer procedures
  10. After repair, clear codes and verify repeated operation over multiple cycles; road-test or cycle lock to ensure reliability

Likely causes

  • Actuator motor failure
  • Wiring open or short to ground/power between actuator and BCM
  • Corroded/loose connector at the rear lock assembly
  • Blown fuse or failed relay supplying the lock

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Rear double engine lock fault — actuator/circuit not responding or reporting correctly. Check actuator, connectors, wiring, fuses/relay and BCM.
