Causes

  • Low battery voltage or poor battery condition
  • Faulty handle-enable relay (stuck closed or coil shorted)
  • Blown or corroded fuse in the handle/relay circuit
  • Damaged wiring or poor connector continuity to relay/handle switch
  • Faulty Body Control Module (BCM) or related module output driver
  • Incorrect module programming or software bug

Symptoms

  • Exterior/roof/door handle behaves as if enabled when it should not
  • Door handle functions intermittently or remains active
  • Related electrical accessories fail to operate reliably
  • Battery drain or faster-than-normal battery discharge
  • Stored body control module fault(s) and possible warning messages

What to check

  • Scan vehicle with OEM-level diagnostic tool; read and record freeze frame and live data
  • Measure battery open-circuit voltage and load/cranking voltage (idle and under load)
  • Inspect handle-enable relay, fuses, and associated connectors for corrosion or damage
  • Check for relevant CAN/LIN communication faults in BCM and related modules
  • Visually inspect wiring harness for chafing, pinched wires, or terminal damage
  • Check BCM grounds and power supply circuits for proper connection and voltage

Signal parameters

  • Battery voltage: normal ~12.6 V (engine off); cranking drop >9–10 V acceptable briefly
  • Low battery threshold: module may flag low when
  • Relay coil control: 0 V (off) / approx battery voltage (on) at relay coil terminal
  • Relay coil resistance: typical 50–200 ohms (verify with service data)
  • CAN/LIN messages: BCM handle-enable command present/absent; check message and checksum
  • Connector pin voltages: supply +12 V present at relay fuse feed; ground continuity to chassis

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect full OEM-capable scanner. Read and record B1102 and any related codes. Note freeze frame and live data.
  2. Measure resting battery voltage. If
  3. Inspect fuses protecting the handle/relay circuit. Replace any blown fuses and inspect fuse holders for corrosion.
  4. Locate the handle-enable relay. With ignition off, inspect relay and socket for corrosion, heat damage or melted plastic. Wiggle test connectors while monitoring for changes.
  5. With proper safety precautions, energise the relay coil using a bench supply or apply battery voltage to the coil control terminal while monitoring coil current and coil resistance. Compare to spec. Replace relay if coil is shorted or contacts stuck.
  6. Probe relay coil control wire with a scope or multimeter while operating handle/enable functions. Confirm BCM command transitions and that relay follows command only when battery voltage is adequate.
  7. Check continuity from BCM output pin to relay coil, and continuity to ground. Repair broken wires, pins or poor crimps as necessary.
  8. If wiring and relay are good, inspect BCM power and ground feeds and check for related communication faults (CAN/LIN). Perform module reprogramming or software update if recommended by manufacturer.
  9. Clear codes, fully cycle ignition and perform functional test of handle. Monitor for reappearance of B1102 and for any battery-voltage related behaviour.
  10. If fault persists after replacing suspect components and updating software, consider BCM replacement following manufacturer diagnostics and security procedures.

Likely causes

  • Battery voltage below module threshold (battery discharged or weak)
  • Stuck or welded relay contacts causing constant relay enable
  • Loose/ corroded connector or poor ground on relay or BCM
  • BCM output driver fault or internal relay-driver failure

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Handle-enable relay commanded active while battery low (or relay permanently active). Check battery, relay, wiring, and BCM.
🟡 Repair difficulty: Medium
