Causes

  • Faulty park/ignition switch or sensor
  • Broken, shorted or corroded wiring or connectors in the park/ignition circuit
  • Poor ground or blown fuse for the ignition/park circuit
  • Intermittent connector contact / water intrusion
  • Body Control Module (BCM) or related module internal fault or software error
  • Aftermarket device or recent repair caused incorrect wiring or damage

Symptoms

  • Warning lamp or message related to ignition/park on dash
  • Vehicle may not recognize Park/Key position (won’t start or won’t shift out of park)
  • Intermittent starting issues or engine crank/no-crank condition
  • CAN-related errors or multiple body electrical anomalies
  • Brake/park interlock or shift lock not functioning

What to check

  • Retrieve freeze-frame data and full module scan with a capable diagnostic tool; note events and related codes
  • Inspect fuse(s) for ignition/BCM inputs and replace if blown
  • Visually inspect park/ignition switch connector and wiring for damage, corrosion or water ingress
  • Check for other related DTCs (BCM, instrument cluster, transmission, immobilizer)
  • Monitor live data: park switch/ignition input state while operating key and shifter
  • Wiggle test wiring while watching live data to identify intermittent faults

Signal parameters

  • Park/ignition switch signal voltage: expected ~0V (off) and ~battery voltage (switched on) at the switch connector
  • Continuity/resistance across the park/ignition switch terminals when actuated (consult vehicle wiring diagram for expected values)
  • Power supply to switch: battery voltage present at feed terminal with ignition off/on as specified
  • Ground continuity from switch and BCM to chassis ground (
  • BCM reported park/ignition status message on CAN bus (binary state)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Use a factory or OE-level scan tool to read B1112 and any related codes; record freeze-frame and static data
  2. Check fuses related to body/ignition circuits; replace any blown fuses and retest
  3. Visually inspect the park/ignition switch, connector and harness for damage, corrosion or water; repair or replace damaged harness/connector
  4. With key removed and ignition off, disconnect connector at the park/ignition switch; check for battery feed and ground at the connector using a DMM
  5. With a helper operate the ignition/key and/or shift to Park while probing the switch signal terminal; verify voltage changes to expected levels (0V ↔ battery voltage)
  6. Perform continuity/resistance check between the switch and BCM connector pins to rule out open circuits or high resistance (unplug both ends)
  7. If wiring and switch check good, monitor the BCM input bit while operating; if BCM never sees the change, consider BCM reflash, module reset, or replacement after confirming wiring
  8. If intermittent only, perform a wiggle test along harness and around connectors while observing live data for dropouts
  9. After repairs, clear codes and perform a road/test cycle to confirm the fault does not return; if persistent, consult wiring diagram and consider module bench tests or professional module repair/replacement

Likely causes

  • Park/ignition switch failed (mechanical/electrical)
  • Open or short in harness between switch and BCM
  • Corroded or loose connector at switch or BCM
  • Blown ignition/BCM fuse or poor power supply to input circuit
  • BCM reporting error due to internal fault or lost CAN communication

Fault status

⚠️ Status
BCM reports abnormal or missing park/ignition input signal — circuit fault between park/ignition switch and control module.
🟡 Repair difficulty: Medium
