Causes

  • Burnt or failed fog lamp bulb
  • Open or shorted wiring in the fog lamp circuit
  • Corroded or loose connector at the lamp or wiring harness
  • Bad ground connection at the lamp or body control module
  • Faulty lamp relay or fuse
  • Faulty body control module (BCM) or lighting module

Symptoms

  • Right front fog lamp does not illuminate when switched on
  • Instrument cluster or message center shows a fog lamp fault or warning
  • Intermittent operation or flicker of the right fog lamp
  • Loss of lamp function only on one side (asymmetric lighting)
  • Possible related faults stored in BCM (communication or lamp circuit)

What to check

  • Scan vehicle with a compatible diagnostic tool; read/record all related DTCs and live data
  • Visually inspect the right fog lamp assembly for damage, water ingress, or burnt bulb
  • Check corresponding fuse(s) and relay(s) for continuity and proper operation
  • Inspect connectors for corrosion, bent pins or loose terminals
  • Measure supply voltage at the lamp connector with fog lights ON (~12V or module-switched voltage)
  • Check continuity and resistance between lamp connector and BCM (with battery disconnected where appropriate)

Signal parameters

  • Supply voltage at lamp connector: approx. 11–14 V when fog lights ON (may be switched/pulsed by module)
  • Bulb resistance (approximate): 2–8 Ω for typical 12V single-filament fog bulb (varies by bulb type)
  • Expected current draw: roughly 1–5 A per fog lamp (depends on bulb wattage)
  • Ground resistance target:
  • No communication errors on CAN network related to BCM when tested

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect diagnostic scanner, record B1148 and any related codes, note freeze frame/live data.
  2. Turn fog lights ON and confirm symptom. Attempt to operate from switch and from any steering/wheel controls.
  3. Perform a visual inspection of the right fog lamp, socket and wiring for damage or corrosion; replace bulb if visibly damaged.
  4. Check fuse(s) and relay(s) for the fog lamp circuit; replace or swap with known-good if uncertain.
  5. With fog lights ON, measure voltage at the lamp connector: if no voltage, trace back toward relay/BCM to find where supply stops.
  6. If voltage present but lamp does not light, test lamp by substituting with a known-good bulb or bench-test lamp assembly.
  7. If lamp and connector appear good but intermittent or no operation, check continuity to BCM and inspect ground. Repair any open or high-resistance connections.
  8. If wiring and lamp are good and control signals from the BCM are absent or incorrect, inspect BCM/lighting module and CAN communication. Reprogram or replace module only after confirming wiring and power/ground are good.
  9. Clear codes and re-test operation. Monitor for return of B1148 and address any additional stored codes as required.

Likely causes

  • Failed bulb or connector corrosion
  • Open circuit or poor ground in lamp wiring
  • Blown fuse or faulty relay
  • Fault in BCM/light module or its programming
