Causes

  • Open, short, or high resistance in the serial data/CAN wiring or connectors
  • Loose, corroded, or damaged connector at BCM, IPC, ECM/PCM or gateway module
  • Faulty module that should transmit or forward the VIN (BCM, IPC, IPC cluster, PCM/gateway)
  • Network bus off condition or missing termination resistor
  • Software/configuration mismatch or corrupted module memory
  • Low battery or intermittent power/ground to one or more modules

Symptoms

  • DTC B1160 stored in one or more control modules
  • Scan tool cannot read vehicle VIN from modules
  • VIN missing or incorrect on instrument cluster, radio, or diagnostic tool
  • Vehicle may fail emissions or VIN verification checks
  • Intermittent or multiple network communication-related faults present
  • Some body functions or security features may be disabled or erratic

What to check

  • Verify battery voltage is within specification and battery terminals are clean and tight
  • Connect a capable scan tool and read all modules; note any other communication or U-codes
  • Attempt to read VIN via scan tool; note which module(s) report no VIN
  • Visually inspect connectors and harnesses at BCM, IPC, PCM/gateway and any inline connectors for corrosion, looseness, or damage
  • Check for recent work or aftermarket installations that may have altered wiring or added modules
  • Check for other communication DTCs (U-codes) that indicate bus issues

Signal parameters

  • Expected: active serial data on vehicle network at key-on and during diagnostics; VIN is broadcast or reported on request
  • Two-wire CAN: recessive idle level ~2.5 V on each line; combined bus termination typically ≈60 ohms across CAN_H/CAN_L (use manufacturer spec)
  • Single-wire networks (some GMLAN implementations) use pulsed serial levels—use oscilloscope or manufacturer values
  • No dominant/bus-off state on the network during idle; message frequencies vary by module but VIN should be available at key-on or when requested
  • Scan tool should show presence of VIN message or module that stores VIN (verify with data list or raw frames)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Record all stored DTCs from every module and note module(s) reporting VIN missing
  2. Verify battery state of charge and perform basic power/ground checks to BCM, IPC and gateway modules
  3. Attempt to read VIN with a factory diagnostic tool or a capable scan tool; identify which control module lacks the VIN
  4. Visually inspect and tug connectors at BCM, IPC, PCM and any gateway or distribution connectors; repair any corrosion or bent pins
  5. Check for other communication codes (U-codes) to help localize bus segment or module failure
  6. Measure resistance across CAN_H and CAN_L at a convenient connector; compare to factory spec (typically ≈60 Ω)
  7. Use a scan tool or oscilloscope to observe serial data while key is ON: verify normal idle waveform and presence of VIN-related frames or responses
  8. If bus signals are absent or corrupted, disconnect segments (module connectors) one at a time per factory isolation procedure to find the faulty module or shorted harness
  9. If a specific module is suspected, verify power, ground, and local input/output signals to that module before replacing
  10. After repair or module replacement, clear DTCs and verify VIN is present and communications are restored; perform any required reprogramming or configuration per manufacturer instructions

Likely causes

  • Damaged or disconnected connector at body control module (BCM) or instrument panel cluster (IPC)
  • Wiring chafe or pinched harness on CAN/data bus circuits
  • Faulty BCM or IPC that does not broadcast VIN
  • Missing or failed gateway/terminator on the data bus
  • Battery/ground problem causing intermittent module startup

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Loss of serial data for VIN — the module did not receive the vehicle identification number over the vehicle data network. Indicates a network wiring, connector, or module communication fault.
🟡 Repair difficulty: Medium
⏱️ Diagnostic time: 1.5 - 3.0 hours
