Causes

  • Faulty master external light switch (mechanical/electrical failure)
  • Open/short in switch wiring or connector
  • Corroded or loose connector terminals
  • Water ingress or contamination at switch or harness
  • Blown fuse or poor ground
  • Intermittent CAN/serial communication error to the Body Control Module (BCM)

Symptoms

  • Exterior lights (headlights, parking, DRL) do not operate or respond correctly
  • Dash message or warning indicating exterior light switch fault
  • Switch illumination not working or intermittent
  • Intermittent or permanent loss of select exterior light functions
  • Lighting behaves unpredictably (stays on/off or only works in one position)

What to check

  • Confirm customer complaint and attempt to reproduce the symptom
  • Scan vehicle with an appropriate diagnostic tool; record B11A2 and any related codes
  • Check for additional related BCM or communication (Uxxxx) codes
  • Visually inspect the switch, bezel, and wiring for damage, moisture or corrosion
  • Check fuses and ground(s) related to exterior lighting and switch circuits
  • Operate the switch while watching live data/inputs on the diagnostic tool

Signal parameters

  • Switch supply voltage (typically 12V with ignition on)
  • Switch return/ground continuity (near 0 ohms when closed)
  • Switch output voltage or resistance in each switch position (refer to service data)
  • BCM input status bits or CAN message showing exterior light switch state
  • Expected CAN/serial messages and module response times (refer to service manual)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Safety first: park vehicle, ignition off, apply parking brake and disconnect battery if required by service procedure.
  2. Connect approved diagnostic tool and read stored/active codes. Note freeze frame and related data.
  3. Attempt to reproduce the fault: operate the master external light switch through all positions while monitoring live data for changes in the switch input or CAN messages.
  4. Perform a visual inspection of the switch assembly, housing and connector for corrosion, water ingress, bent pins or damage.
  5. Check relevant fuses and grounds. Repair or replace as required.
  6. With ignition on, measure supply voltage to the switch and the output signal(s) from the switch. Compare readings to manufacturer specification.
  7. Perform continuity and resistance checks between the switch terminals and the BCM connector. Repair any open/short circuits found.
  8. If switch signals are correct at the switch but not at the BCM, trace and repair wiring or connector issues between switch and BCM.
  9. If the switch is not providing correct output but wiring is good, bench-test or replace the switch assembly.
  10. If wiring and switch are good and communication/input to BCM is valid but code returns, consider reprogramming/flash update or replacement of BCM following manufacturer procedures.
  11. Clear codes and road-test to confirm repair. Re-scan to ensure B11A2 does not return.

Likely causes

  • Damaged or contaminated switch assembly
  • Wiring chafe or pinched harness causing intermittent open/short
  • Loose connector at switch or BCM
  • Failed switch illumination lamp/LED or internal contact wear

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Master external light switch fault detected. Check switch, wiring and BCM input. Intermittent or permanent failure possible.
