Ambient temperature sensor circuit failure

Causes

  • Open or short in ambient temperature sensor wiring
  • Corroded, loose or damaged sensor connector
  • Faulty ambient temperature (NTC) sensor
  • Water intrusion or debris at sensor location (grille/bumper)
  • Poor ground or missing reference voltage from body control module (BCM)
  • Intermittent wiring damage from road debris or pinched harness

Symptoms

  • Outside/ambient temperature display incorrect, blank or shows erroneous values
  • Automatic climate control may not behave as expected
  • Related dashboard message or warning about external temperature sensor
  • Possible stored or active B1254 fault in vehicle diagnostic system
  • Intermittent fault when temperature or vehicle vibration changes

What to check

  • Scan vehicle for B1254 and any related stored codes; note freeze-frame data
  • Visually inspect sensor (front bumper/grille area) and wiring for damage, corrosion or water
  • Unplug connector and inspect pins for corrosion, pullback or bent pins
  • Backprobe connector with ignition on: check reference voltage and ground presence
  • Measure sensor resistance at ambient temperature and compare with expected thermistor behavior (resistance changes with temperature)
  • Perform wiggle test on wiring while monitoring live data/voltage to reproduce intermittent faults

Signal parameters

  • Sensor type: typically an NTC thermistor (resistance falls as temperature rises)
  • Typical resistance range: order of kilo-ohms (example: ~2–30 kΩ across extreme temps) — consult OEM spec for exact values
  • Typical signal/voltage: varies with design (commonly ~0.5–4.5 V or measured as resistance) depending on ambient temperature
  • Expected behavior: steady change in resistance/voltage as ambient temperature changes; no abrupt jumps or open-circuit reading

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Read and record DTC(s) and live data with a scan tool. Note when fault set (conditions, temperature).
  2. Locate ambient temperature sensor (usually in front bumper/grille). Visually inspect for damage, contamination, or signs of impact/water ingress.
  3. Disconnect sensor. Inspect connector pins for corrosion, bent pins or pushed-back terminals. Clean or repair connector as needed.
  4. With ignition on, backprobe the sensor connector. Verify reference voltage (if applicable) and ground continuity to the BCM. If reference/ground missing, inspect wiring to module.
  5. Measure sensor resistance at ambient temperature. Compare measured values to OEM specification or verify resistance changes when exposed to warmer/colder air (breath or ice). Replace if out of expected behavior.
  6. Check wiring continuity from sensor connector to BCM and for shorts to battery or ground. Repair any open or shorted circuits.
  7. If wiring and sensor check good but fault persists, inspect BCM wiring harness and grounds. If necessary, consult wiring diagrams and consider module diagnostics.
  8. After repairs, clear codes and road-test. Confirm proper ambient temperature display and that code does not return.

Likely causes

  • Corroded/loose connector at sensor (most common)
  • Damaged wiring harness between sensor and BCM
  • Failed ambient temperature sensor element (thermistor)
  • Water or dirt contamination at sensor mounting
  • Module fault after verifying wiring and sensor
