Causes

  • Open, short or high-resistance wiring in potentiometer signal, reference or ground circuits
  • Corroded, loose or damaged connector at the servo or control module
  • Failed/dirty potentiometer inside the servo (wear or contamination)
  • Seized or mechanically damaged servo causing abnormal feedback
  • Faulty HVAC/climate control module or internal input circuit
  • Water ingress or corrosion in servo assembly or harness

Symptoms

  • HVAC does not move to the requested cool/temperature or distribution position
  • Incorrect or no position indication shown on climate control (if displayed)
  • HVAC operates intermittently or reverts to a default mode
  • Audible clicking/straining from the dash servo
  • DTC B1280 stored and may illuminate a message or HVAC malfunction indicator

What to check

  • Read stored and pending codes and freeze frame data with a diagnostic tool
  • Identify which servo is reporting B1280 by using the vehicle scan tool to exercise actuators
  • Visually inspect servo connector and harness for damage, corrosion, pinch or water ingress
  • Check for related codes (other servo or module codes) that can point to shared wiring or module faults
  • Backprobe the servo connector with the ignition on and actuator at rest to confirm reference voltage, signal and ground present

Signal parameters

  • Reference voltage: typically 5 V from HVAC module (verify with service data)
  • Signal output: potentiometer voltage should vary smoothly with servo movement (approx. 0–5 V range depending on design)
  • Ground: low resistance to chassis ground (
  • No abrupt jumps, open circuit or short to supply/ground when moving servo manually or via actuator test

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Use a scan tool to confirm B1280 is current and perform an actuator/servo test to observe operation and signal response.
  2. Visually inspect the cool servo, harness and connector for corrosion, water, damage, or disconnection. Repair or reseal any damage.
  3. Backprobe connector pins: with ignition on, verify the presence of the reference voltage (≈5 V), a solid ground and the potentiometer signal. Record readings while commanding the servo through its full travel.
  4. Wiggle the wiring and connector while observing live data for intermittent changes consistent with movement—pay attention to any intermittent faults.
  5. If reference and ground are present but signal is open/erratic, measure continuity between servo connector and HVAC control module connector to check for harness faults.
  6. If wiring and connectors are good, remove the servo and bench-test or replace the servo assembly (some designs require replacement of the complete servo including potentiometer).
  7. After repair or replacement, clear codes, perform actuator test and verify correct operation across full range; road-test and recheck for reoccurrence.
  8. If wiring and actuator test good but fault remains, consider HVAC control module input circuit fault and proceed with module testing or replacement per factory procedure.

Likely causes

  • Connector corrosion at servo (water entry common)
  • Broken/shorted wire in harness to the instrument panel or under-dash area
  • Failed servo potentiometer due to age or contamination
  • Mechanical binding of the flap preventing proper potentiometer sweep

Fault status

⚠️ Status
HVAC control module detected a failure in the cool servo motor potentiometer circuit (open/short/invalid signal). Check servo, connector and wiring; replace faulty component as required.
🟡 Repair difficulty: Medium
⏱️ Diagnostic time: 0.5-2.0 hours
