Causes

  • Loose, corroded or disconnected connector at mirror, camera or junction
  • Damaged video/coax/LVDS harness (short, open or intermittent)
  • Faulty camera or camera module (rear/side camera providing video D)
  • Faulty interior mirror display/module
  • Blown fuse or poor power/ground to camera or mirror module
  • Software/firmware error or module configuration fault

Symptoms

  • No image or black screen in the interior mirror display
  • Intermittent video (dropouts, freezing or pixelation)
  • Distorted or noisy image on the mirror display
  • Warning or message on instrument cluster or mirror about camera/video
  • DTC B1285 stored and possibly other video-related codes

What to check

  • Scan vehicle and read freeze frame/related DTCs. Note any other video or communication codes.
  • Visually inspect connectors at the interior mirror, camera(s) and any intermediate junctions for corrosion, damage or water ingress.
  • Verify fuses, power and ground circuits for the mirror and relevant camera(s).
  • Wiggle-test harness while monitoring video to detect intermittent faults.
  • Check for signs of physical damage to camera lenses, mirror housing or wiring harness.
  • Confirm software/firmware level of the mirror and video modules; check TSBs and available updates.

Signal parameters

  • Analog composite video: typical ~1.0 V peak-to-peak with 75 ohm impedance (if used) — refer to service manual for exact values.
  • Digital video (LVDS) uses differential pairs with low-voltage signals — expected balanced differential waveform; compare to known-good specification.
  • CAN/serial communication for module control should be present and error-free; verify bus integrity with a scan tool.
  • Power supply: stable battery voltage at camera/mirror power pins with

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a diagnostic scan tool. Read B1285 and any related DTCs (video inputs, camera, CAN/BUS faults). Record freeze frame data.
  2. Clear codes and attempt to reproduce fault. Note whether code returns immediately, intermittently or only after certain actions (reverse gear, camera activation).
  3. Perform visual inspection of connectors, grommets and visible harness for chafing, corrosion or water entry. Repair any damage found.
  4. Verify power and ground at the interior mirror module and the supplying camera(s). Check fuses and fusible links.
  5. If safe and accessible, unplug and replug connectors to clean contacts. Re-test for code presence.
  6. If video is analog, use an oscilloscope or video signal tester at the mirror input to verify presence and integrity of the composite signal. If digital, verify differential LVDS pairs with appropriate scope or compare CAN/serial traffic for camera control.
  7. Perform continuity and short-to-ground/power tests on the video harness between the camera and mirror. Repair any open/short faults.
  8. If wiring and power are good, swap the suspected camera with a known-good unit (or substitute a known-good mirror/module) if available to isolate the faulty component.
  9. Check for and apply any required software updates or reprogramming to the mirror or camera modules per factory procedure.
  10. After repair or replacement, clear codes and verify functionality in all operating modes (reverse view, auto-dimming camera modes). Retest for road/driving conditions as required.

Likely causes

  • Poor connector/corroded contact at the interior mirror or camera
  • Damaged video cable between camera and mirror
  • Failed interior mirror display/module
  • Failed camera providing the video D feed
  • Power/ground fault (fuse, splice, ground point)
