Right air intake potentiometer servo open circuit

Causes

  • Broken or disconnected wiring between the right intake servo potentiometer and the control module (BCM/HVAC control unit)
  • Corroded or loose connector pins at the servo or module
  • Internal failure of the potentiometer or servo assembly
  • Water ingress or contamination at the servo connector
  • Faulty HVAC control module or body control module (rare)
  • Blown fuse or poor ground affecting potentiometer supply

Symptoms

  • Right-side air intake flap does not move or is stuck in one position
  • HVAC airflow distribution incorrect on right side
  • Inability to blend air properly to right zone (temperature/comfort issues)
  • DTC B1289 stored and HVAC/BCM warning or limp mode for climate functions
  • Intermittent operation of right intake flap or inconsistent flap position

What to check

  • Retrieve freeze frame/live data and additional HVAC or body codes with a diagnostic scanner
  • Visual inspection of the right intake servo, wiring harness, and connector for damage or contamination
  • Wiggle test the harness and connector while observing live potentiometer value to check intermittent open
  • Check relevant fuses and grounds for the HVAC/BCM circuits
  • Back-probe connector and measure supply reference voltage and signal while operating servo
  • Measure continuity between potentiometer signal/ground pins and the control module pins (with ignition off)

Signal parameters

  • Reference supply voltage: typically ~5 V (verify factory spec)
  • Signal voltage (position indicator): changes across approx. 0.5–4.5 V as flap moves (verify on vehicle)
  • Potentiometer resistance: varies with position (few kΩ typical) — check factory values
  • Open-circuit condition: infinite resistance or no measurable signal to control module

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Read and record all HVAC/body codes and freeze frame data. Note any related codes (left intake, blend doors, module faults).
  2. Attempt to actuate the right intake servo from the diagnostic tool while observing the potentiometer position value. Note if value is fixed or not present.
  3. Perform a visual inspection of the servo and connector; look for water, corrosion, broken wires, or pin damage.
  4. With ignition off, disconnect connector and check continuity between the potentiometer pins and the module pins. Repair any open circuits.
  5. With connector connected and ignition ON (or as instructed by service manual), back-probe reference, signal and ground pins. Verify reference voltage (~5 V), ground continuity, and that the signal changes when actuator is moved or commanded.
  6. If reference and ground present but signal absent/open, remove servo and bench-test potentiometer/servo assembly or measure resistance across potentiometer terminals. Replace servo if internal open or outside specification.
  7. If wiring and servo are good but no signal reaches the module, inspect/repair harness to module and check the control module pin and input circuit for faults. Consider module replacement only after wiring and actuator confirmed good.
  8. After repair or replacement, clear codes and perform full functional test of HVAC intake flaps and confirm no recurrence.

Likely causes

  • Damaged wiring harness near the right footwell or under dash where the servo is mounted
  • Connector pushed out, pins bent, or oxidised at the servo plug
  • Failed potentiometer within the right intake servo due to wear or moisture
  • Short/open caused by previous repairs or modified wiring

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Open-circuit detected on right air intake potentiometer (right intake servo). Position feedback signal missing or out of range; HVAC/BCM unable to verify right intake flap position.
