Battery saver relay coil circuit open

Causes

  • Blown fuse or fusible link supplying the relay coil
  • Open or damaged wiring in the relay supply or control circuit
  • Corroded, loose or damaged relay socket/connector pins
  • Faulty battery saver relay (open coil)
  • Poor or open ground connection for the relay coil
  • Body Control Module (BCM) output driver failure

Symptoms

  • Accessories that should be switched by the battery saver may not turn on or off
  • Battery may not be isolated by the saver function leading to excessive drain or, conversely, accessories remain dead
  • Related convenience functions (interior lights, radio retained power) may fail
  • Possible absence of expected relay click when accessory power is commanded
  • Possible DTCs related to BCM outputs or communications

What to check

  • Scan vehicle for B1314 and any additional DTCs; record freeze frame and pending codes
  • Visual inspection of relay, relay socket, wiring, fuses and ground points for damage or corrosion
  • Check fuse(s) feeding the battery saver relay coil for continuity/power
  • Listen for relay operation (audible click) while commanding accessory on/off
  • Backprobe relay coil pins and measure voltage when relay commanded ON and OFF
  • Measure coil resistance with relay removed (compare to spec/range)

Signal parameters

  • Relay coil resistance (typical): ~20–150 ohms (manufacturer-specific — consult service data)
  • Supply voltage to relay coil when energized: battery voltage (~11–14.5 V)
  • Control signal behavior: switching to ground or switched supply depending on design — should change state when commanded
  • Expected continuity: supply and control conductors should show low resistance (typically
  • Expected ground resistance: close to 0 ohms; high resistance (>1–2 ohms) indicates poor ground

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve and record all DTCs and freeze frame data. Attempt to command the battery saver relay ON/OFF with a scan tool while observing symptoms.
  2. Perform visual inspection: check relay, socket, fuses, wiring harness, and ground points for damage, corrosion or loose terminals.
  3. Verify fuses: remove/check continuity of any fuse(s) that feed the relay coil and replace if blown. Re-scan for DTC persistence.
  4. With ignition off remove the relay and measure the coil resistance across the coil terminals with a multimeter. If open/infinite, replace relay.
  5. Reinstall relay. Backprobe the relay coil supply and control terminals. With key/accessory OFF and then command ON via scan tool, verify supply voltage and control signal behavior (voltage present or switching to ground as designed).
  6. If no voltage/control signal present, check continuity from relay socket to BCM pin for open circuit and inspect connector pins for corrosion or damage.
  7. Check ground continuity from relay socket ground to vehicle chassis/battery negative. Repair any high resistance or open ground.
  8. If wiring, connectors and relay test good but circuit still open, suspect BCM output driver fault. Verify BCM power/grounds and communications. Consult manufacturer service data before replacing BCM.
  9. After repairs clear codes, re-test function and perform a road/usage test to confirm battery saver behavior and that B1314 does not return.

Likely causes

  • Open wiring or broken/poor connection at relay socket
  • Blown fuse supplying the relay coil
  • Faulty relay with an open coil
  • Open or high-resistance ground for the relay coil
  • BCM driver or module fault (less common, after wiring/relay checked)

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Battery saver relay coil circuit open — coil not receiving expected supply or control signal; relay will not activate.
🟡 Repair difficulty: Medium
