Causes

  • Failed LED or LED module in exterior door handle
  • Open or short circuit in the door-handle lighting wiring harness or connector
  • Corroded/loose connector or pin at handle or at BCM/harness splice
  • Blown fuse or faulty lighting relay/power supply
  • Poor ground at handle or vehicle body ground point
  • Faulty BCM or body module output circuit

Symptoms

  • Exterior door handle illumination absent or intermittent
  • Door handle LED flickers or stays permanently on
  • Interior/exterior ambient lighting warning message or stored body module fault
  • Possible error or warning on instrument cluster / message centre
  • No change to door-handle lighting after switching vehicle lighting modes

What to check

  • Visual inspection of the affected door handle for damage, moisture or loose trim
  • Check related fuses and fusable links for the door-handle / exterior lighting circuit
  • Scan vehicle with a capable diagnostic tool for B1326 and any related codes (BCM and body network)
  • Inspect connectors at the door handle and at the door hinge/door jamb harness for corrosion, bent pins or water ingress
  • Confirm good battery voltage and engine/ignition on supply at the BCM and at the handle connector
  • Verify vehicle network (CAN) communication to the BCM with a scan tool

Signal parameters

  • Supply voltage to handle with ignition/lighting on: approx. 11–14 V expected
  • LED forward voltage (depending on color): typically ~2.0–3.5 V (single LED) — measured across LED terminals when driven
  • LED current: generally low (10–50 mA) — check current only if safe and by spec
  • Resistance between LED positive and ground with circuit disconnected: open/infinite may indicate failed LED; very low may indicate short
  • Continuity from BCM output to handle lamp connector: near 0 Ω to low ohms (allow for connector resistance)
  • CAN/BCM message: BCM should be present on network and able to report lamp status via diagnostic tool

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve and record all stored DTCs and freeze frame data with a diagnostic scanner; note any other related B or U codes
  2. Perform a visual inspection of the affected handle assembly and adjacent wiring for physical damage, signs of moisture ingress, or loose mounting
  3. Check fuses related to exterior/door lighting; replace any blown fuses and re-test
  4. With ignition on, measure battery/supply voltage at the handle connector power pin; if no supply, trace back to fuse, relay or wiring
  5. Check ground at the handle: measure voltage drop between handle ground and battery negative while illuminating circuit (should be very low); repair any high-resistance ground
  6. Using an appropriate meter, check for continuity between the BCM output pin and the handle connector; if open, inspect/repair harness and door flex/hinge area
  7. If power and ground are present at the handle but LED does not light, remove the handle lamp module and bench-test the LED (apply correct polarity and limited current per spec) to confirm LED condition
  8. Inspect connector pins for corrosion or bent pins; clean contact surfaces and apply dielectric grease if required
  9. If wiring and lamp module test good but fault remains, check BCM outputs and body network messages with manufacturer-level diagnostic tool; monitor live data for lamp control command and status
  10. If BCM output is suspect and all wiring/LED checks are good, consider BCM replacement or module repair per manufacturer procedures (follow vehicle-specific programming and coding steps)
  11. After any repair, clear codes and perform functional test of door-handle illumination across lighting modes and vehicle sleep/wake cycles; road/test cycle if required to ensure issue is resolved

Likely causes

  • Failed LED/LED module in the door handle
  • Open or damaged wiring or connector to the handle
  • Corroded connector or water ingress at the handle
  • Blown fuse or poor ground connection
