Causes

What to check

  • Visual inspection of passenger door latch/switch, harness, and boot for damage, corrosion or moisture
  • Check connectors at the door switch and at the BCM for bent pins, corrosion or looseness
  • Perform a wiggle/operate test on the wiring in the door hinge area while monitoring live data to reproduce fault
  • Measure reference voltage and ground at the door switch connector with a multimeter
  • Check continuity between the door switch signal pin and the BCM input pin

Signal parameters

  • Expected: door switch provides a discrete signal to BCM (open = circuit open or pulled to +12V; closed = grounded or pulled to GND depending on vehicle design)
  • Typical voltage levels (vehicle dependent): closed ~0 V (ground) or near 0.5 V; open ~12 V or floating/high impedance
  • Resistance: closed switch ~0–5 Ω; open condition >> 1 kΩ or OL (infinite)
  • Look for stable signal transition when door is manually opened/closed in live data

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a compatible diagnostic scanner and record the stored fault, freeze-frame data and live door status while operating the passenger door.
  2. Visually inspect the passenger door latch/switch, connector and wiring harness at the door and at the body entry boot for obvious damage, corrosion or water entry.
  3. With ignition on, backprobe the door switch connector: verify reference voltage (if present) and monitor signal while opening/closing the door. Note expected change in the scanner live data.
  4. If no signal change, disconnect the door switch and measure continuity between the switch terminals. If the switch fails bench test, replace the switch.
  5. If switch tests good, measure continuity between the switch signal terminal and the BCM input terminal. Repair any open or high-resistance wiring. Pay special attention to the hinge/boot area.
  6. Check for shorts to battery or ground on the signal wire (use multimeter or wiring diagram to isolate). Repair insulation or replace harness as required.
  7. Inspect and repair connectors (clean corrosion, repair pins, replace connector if necessary).
  8. After repairs, clear DTCs, verify proper door status in live data and perform a function test (open/close, lock/unlock). Re-scan to confirm the code does not return.
  9. If wiring and switch are confirmed good and fault remains, consider module input failure and consult manufacturer service information before replacing BCM.

  • Failed mechanical door latch switch (stuck, broken, or not making contact)
  • Connector corrosion at door switch or in the body harness
