Internal ABS control module failure

Page language: EN

Causes

  • Internal hardware failure in the ABS control module
  • Corrupted or failed module software/firmware
  • Intermittent or low battery/charging system voltage
  • Poor power or ground connection to the ABS module
  • Damaged or corroded connector or wiring harness to the module
  • CAN bus communication faults or wiring short/open

Symptoms

  • ABS warning lamp illuminated (may be steady or flashing)
  • Traction control / ESC warning lamp on
  • ABS/TC functions disabled; vehicle may show reduced braking performance under ABS events
  • Loss of communication with ABS module on diagnostic scanner
  • Stored DTCs related to ABS module internal fault and possibly related sensor faults
  • Brake pedal behavior may feel normal until ABS intervention is needed

What to check

  • Read all stored DTCs and freeze frame data with a capable scan tool; note related U- and C-codes
  • Check vehicle battery condition and charging system voltage (idle and under load)
  • Inspect ABS module connector for corrosion, damaged pins, water ingress, or loose connections
  • Verify fuses and relays feeding the ABS module
  • Check power and ground at the ABS module harness with a DMM (voltage and continuity)
  • Confirm CAN bus communication to the module (scan tool communication, CAN H/L voltages, termination)

Signal parameters

  • Module supply voltage (battery voltage at module pin) — typically ~12.0–14.5 V
  • Module ground continuity/resistance to chassis ground (should be near 0 ohms)
  • CAN H/L idle voltages (~2.5 V common mode) and differential behavior
  • Wheel speed sensor frequencies/voltages at each wheel with wheel rotation
  • Pump motor current draw and solenoid actuator outputs when commanded (if supported)
  • Module internal error/status bytes reported by manufacturer scan tool

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Use a manufacturer-capable scan tool to read B1342 and any related codes; record freeze frame and full code list.
  2. Verify battery state of charge and charging system. Recharge/replace battery if voltage low; retest.
  3. Inspect ABS module connector and wiring for damage, corrosion, bent pins, or water ingress; repair as needed.
  4. Check fuses/relays related to ABS power and control circuits; replace faulty items.
  5. With key on, engine off, measure supply voltage and ground at the ABS module connector; ensure stable supply and good ground.
  6. Confirm CAN bus communication: verify the ABS module is present on the network and check CAN H/L voltages and termination resistances.
  7. Use live data to compare wheel speed sensor inputs and look for noise or missing signals that could trigger internal errors.
  8. Attempt module self-tests and actuator tests via the scan tool; note any failures reported by the module.
  9. If wiring, power, and communications are confirmed good, attempt a software reflash/reprogram of ABS module per manufacturer procedures.
  10. If reflash fails or internal faults persist after wiring and software checks, consider module repair or replacement and program/configure the replacement module as required.
  11. Clear codes and road-test to verify repair; re-scan to ensure no return of B1342 or related codes.

Likely causes

  • ABS control module failed internally (component fault)
  • Poor ground or supply to module causing internal faults
  • Connector corrosion or pin damage at module
  • CAN bus short or termination problem preventing normal module operation
  • Software corruption that requires reflash or module replacement

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Internal ABS control module failure — module has detected an internal fault. ABS/ESC may be disabled and diagnostic trouble codes stored. Verify supply, grounds, wiring, and communications before considering module replacement.
